OnX vs, HuntWise? Hunt stand etc?

Most county tax maps allow you to export single or multiple parcels as KML. Then you can import those features into Onx and you've got the parcel data you need. That fixes the whole OnX subscription conundrum for me.

Until they read this thread and disable data import for non-members. Oops, sorry.

Spartan is another app that tries to be too much, plus their desktop client is (currently at least) hot garbage. I think AI is superfluous is the hunting world. It's like using a sledge hammer on a tack.

OnX has the best UI but stupidly outdated and chitty maps. Most aerials you're stuck with useless summer photos, they need to have aerial options when the leaves are down. Huntstand has the best maps with lots of choices and good historical imagery to see recent changes. I use both, but wish OnX would just offer more map options.

Things I like about ONX, the wind setup for your waypoints. You can identify your preferred wind at your tree stand its awesome it uses existing wind (I know likely not accurate but still) and compares to your setting. The offline maps are great but you only get three map types. However the gps is a no go for me I am out cannot rely on location at all. Hunt stand offline maps suck bad but the gps seems more stable than ONX so going with them but still looking for hunt app options for sure.

Spartan Forge Hunting App Walkthrough - YouTube

Here is the new SF tutorial video and it shows all the new updates. If your experience was with the beta testing of the app or in the last year, you need to take a look at it again. They have joined up with some very high level map agencies and other agencies that allow them to pull data other apps cant even process. I have both OnX and SF and SF is clearly ensuring they are progressing at a faster rate technologically than any other hunting app. That is coming directly from the owner who specialized in cyber and digital anti terrorism in his military career. I am guessing OnX will just offer to buy him out or another larger app that has been around, similar to when Google buys WAZE or FB buys whatsapp and instagram.

Thanks for the info on the Spartan Forge. I've used Hunt Stand the past two seasons with no real complaints. I just added Spartan Forge and will give that a try as well. I really liked the hunt zone feature of Hunt Stand which ""shows" your cone of scent based off of wind direction.

I use OnX and it’s done the trick, but I’ll admit, spartanforge caught my eye…. I just don’t want to lose all my intel on OnX. Sure wish there was a way to transfer that sort of stuff.
I copy and paste all important data off OnX to my Google Earth as backup. I like how I can go back and look at old images in Google Earth and see how the land changes over time. It helps too to be able to see the trees without leaves.

Be mindful that the wind cone isnt going to show you thermal movement.

After only reading a few replies on the first page of this post, I cancelled my On X Hunt app and signed up for HuntStand.
On X Hunt has not updated their mapping in over 2 years. I know landowners that have purchased new properties and it is NOT shown on this app. Time for me to move on to something more current, to get my money's worth out of the app.

I’ve narrowed down to just HuntStand and Spartan Forge. Haven’t got a lot of use out of SF but I got in way early on it and just want to see where it goes. HuntStand is awesome for all of its features. You’ll like it.

I don’t know where in the world you are but Spartan forge to me (I’m east coast) Deffinately seems more accurate for the guys hunting out Midwest and I know that’s been discussed in quite a few podcasts too. I like the app actually very much but I have seen it be a little contradicting of itself. Never the less I have onX huntstand and Spartan forge and I will not be renewing on x

Yep I’ve actually seen the same thing in SF. So far it seems to have a lot of good functionality with the tools it has. But I have seen numerous properties missing info and there’s several spots it does not show public land boundaries around my area. I’m in NW Ohio for reference. But I’m in it for cheap enough I feel it is worth sticking with it still for now.

If my membership lapses or something and I would have to pay full price to get back into it, I don’t know that I would honestly.

I’m right where you are with the apps. Had all 3 of those but I let OnX expire. If I had to keep just 1 app, it would definitely be HuntStand at this point.

I tried Hunt stand for the year since it had to discount code. I'm not getting use to how to use it. I thought OnX was pretty easy to use. But struggling every time I open it so far. Kinda wish I would have stayed with OnX for simplicity.

Huntstand, I'm not even sure the engineers consulted actual hunters, the UI and inclusions of useless features is so bad. The "hunt areas" bugs the crap out of me.
And they tried to add a social network component just makes me roll my eyes.

The UI is horrendous but I find myself using it the most for the quality of the satellite and aerial maps. Then I go to OnX for property borders and marking waypoints. Then I go to my Garmin GPS for navigation.

I put more generic terrain waypoints into OnX like bedding areas, funnels, etc. and specific waypoints like actual trees, routes, live on my Garmin. And the weather features on hunt apps are white noise, Windy is better at that. The best solution for me generally requires patching multiple components together.

Spot on with my assessment. Confirms there's plenty of room in the market for other apps.

I guess I'm still salty from when OnX first emerged .... I'd spent years putting together layers of data in ArcGIS, digitizing parcels, exporting to GPX, etc. I felt like everyone just caught up to me in an instant ... but that's just tech. Pretty soon, we won't even have to talk to each other.

We already don’t have to talk to each other. Sadly.

Me too. I lost a lot of hard earned spots to hunting pressure thanks to it. At this point anything remotely textbook obvious on an aerial, there will be a stand or three hanging there. We were ahead of the curve for a little while but the curve caught us.

I have both and only open Huntstand to check the predicted wind direction.

I like Onx much better

I have both my issue with Hunt Stand is their OFFLINE maps. Where I hunt cell service us sketchy at best. Huntstand offline maps are really weak they need to revamp their approach to it but I couldn’t wait and I never see any upgrades to the offline map feature.

I was scouting on Thankgiving and logging way points in thick woods. I was backing out and double backing on my trail. I get to the main trail but im kinda confused. The locator icon has be about 400 yards from the trail. It wasn't until a couple of minutes later did it lock on.

When this happened I checked google maps and it had me where I was actually at. Im betting all the scrapes and rubs are not going to be accurate, same with trees I tried to log to saddle hunt at.

The other issue is when you log a way point, you have to make sure you hit the location Icon otherwise it will not save the waypoint where you are standing. I also had a bunch of pictures just disappear. I will have to check out some other apps. Really want to like the software but may backup all my waypoiny with my inreach at some point.

I will see tomorrow how close it is to my hunt spot. Hopefully they fix some of the issues.

I’ll take Hunt Stand over any other one every day of the week. Everything is better in my opinion. Also if you load your map by scrolling over everything you need before going out of service then it’s the exact same quality. The app will automatically store that data for up to a week without service.
