Packs.... for Saddle hunting

I really like this one. Now to find a used one. Thanks for the heads up.

I purchased the Mainbeam from Amazon and not sure I care for it. I like the design with the compression straps; they work well enough so far (1 hunt). But everything seems very "breakable" although it is a light pack. The fastex buckles especially seem like they won't survive long.

Mine may be up for sale soon. :)

I have been using the Tenzing 4000 for a few years now. It is huge and heavy, but I carry climbpaw steps in the meat pocket and most of my warm clothes in the main compartment. I also like the ability to pack out a deer which I have done on several occasions. I also like the rain poncho and the gun holder.

I used the Horn Hunter Main Beam for a week long public land hunt in Illinois. The pack is perfect. It handled everything I threw at it.

Thanks @BassBoysLLP for the suggestion. There were a couple hunts that the pack was nearing 50 lbs and the MB did great.

50 lbs? Did you start carrying backup platforms every hunt? ;)

Kidding aside, it's a good pack that sets up well for the self filmer. Glad to hear you like it as well.

I think he was carrying all of his brothers gear around too

50 is a guess. But I'm used to a 35 lb rucksack and my pack was heavier on the days I packed my cold weather clothes.

I need to weigh everything.

Horn hunter main beam
3 Muddy sticks with aiders
Ameristep platform on OCB
Sitdrag with pouches, tether, lineman belt
Camera with 4th arrow camera arm & base
GoPro
Kill kit
Headlamp with backup
Grunt, rattle bag, bleat
Limb saw
Pull up rope
16 oz bottle of Water, 2 clif bars
Warm clothes
Gloves
Range finder
Bow

That's about it. I didn't take anything extra. But I had to be close to 40-45 lbs.

The pack I use isn't a conventional hunting pack but I love it. It's a Direct Action Dragon Egg and it's a great pack. I looked long and hard at a lot of packs and that one seemed to be exactly what I wanted. My only gripe is that the cordura material is slightly noisy but it's fine. Never been an issue. You guys should check them out

After searching for a pack that would handle cold weather hunts and the extra clothes and gear I need I went with the vanguard pioneer 1600. I found it for $86 with a lifetime warranty. So far I really like it. It’s been on 7-8 hunts so far and has everything I was looking for. It’s not too big and not too small. It can carry a gun or bow, has rain cover, cooler pouch, removable waist belt pouches, carries sticks well with the center cinch strap and the wings can secure additional items. Pockets in the wings, side pockets and waist belt pouches make gear easily accessible without digging. They make this model in a 1000 and 2100 also. My only complaint would be that it is a bit heavier than I’m used to but my early season pack would only carry sticks and whatever I could stuff into a couple small pockets. It does carry weight well but isn’t a pack your going to pack out game with. I didn’t know vanguard made packs so I wanted to pass this on. Maybe someone else will find it a good fit.

I have posted this 100 times, but I like minimalist pack, keeps me from carrying crap I don't need.

Thanks,
Boswell
What was the price of the outpaq ? Did you buy it direct from the manufacturer? Thanks for any help.

That dragon egg looks heavy!

The pioneer 1600 looks like a great early season pack. @Chistavocat where did you get it for $87?

My mistake. It was $98 although it was a or best offer on eBay. I decided I wanted it and didn’t want to mess with making an offer. The seller is vanguard photo in whitmore lake, Michigan. I believe it is there warehouse. They make a 2100 also. I don’t carry camera gear and didn’t want to carry unneeded extras with a pack that large.

G2,

Are you using the regular horn hunter or the xl? After reviewing almost every pack on this thread, this one appealed to me most. Just wondering which you went with since you are carrying camera gear.
