Padding a saddle

Has anyone padded their saddle? I'm thinking about doing this for comfort and cold reasons. Last season I had an old vest that was lined with what looked like sheeps wool. The white fleecy stuff. I'm not sure what it's called. Anyway it made a difference but was a pain in the butt to get adjusted right. Once it was adjusted, it was very comfy and warm. I'm thinking a could custom make a fleece panel to fit in perfectly.

I know a few guys who use the regular lone wolf seat cushions in between them and the saddle. Supposed to help with hip pinch and overall comfort. I plan to try it also

Padding a saddle has had mixed results. If the padding extends to the hips it adds to the pinch felt. Depending on your body shape and saddle it may be more comfortable because it is spreading out a load but it does add to pinch. Much like hammocks it’s believed it’s better to insulate under the saddle or hammock than between you and the saddle. All you can do is try it and see. A camping is cheap to cut up and try.

I've tried this in the basement and it seems promising and if I hadn't found a saddle that is comfortable with no hip pinch I probably would still be using it. The circle parts fit just perfectly around my hip bones alleviating hip pinch and it weighs next to nothing and rolls up in a pocket. The material is a little noisy and I was planning on making a fleece cover for it to slip into. https://www.amazon.com/Klymit-Inflatable-Travel-Pillow-Cushion/dp/B07VZZD7WJ

Thats pretty slick. I don't really have a comfort issue, but I could see how it would be pretty comfortable in a saddle if those circle parts line up good with hip bones.

It fits perfectly on a sit drag. I didn't spend much time on the sit drag with that on it but it would definitely work and definitely enhance comfort. I'm a 34-36" waist and there's a little room to grow or shrink with the size of the circles in that pad. I liked that there was little bulk and the amount of cushioning could be adjusted too with the amount of air.

Awesome, I'm roughly the same size. I found the company has an ebay store and right now they have factory seconds (misprints or off colors) and they are selling for $9 with free shipping! I don't really care what the color is because I'll make a cover for it as well. This site is excellent at helping me spend money on something I wasn't looking for  but for 9 bucks, why not give it a try.

Good deal! Report back how it works, I just found a comfortable saddle and didn't pursue it anymore. I have used it tent camping for a pillow though, ha!

About 4 years ago I bought an olive green out-door padded director’s chair from Walmart. It was a polyester 600D material with a water resistant padding sewn inside of it. I cut it to shape, hemmed the cut parts. Then I sewed it into a seatbelt loop, added a 1.5” strap and Cobra buckle for a waist strap and 1” webbing for leg loops. I think the final dimensions were like 30” wide by like 16” tall. It wasn’t the prettiest thing to look at but it was very strong, weighed in around 2lbs and was probably one of the most comfortable saddles I have ever sat in. There was no hip pinch at all. However it was bulky like a diaper and it is a little too warm down here for all that extra insulation. So I retired it after 4 months of use. But as far as comfort, you’d be hard pressed to beat it. Personally if I were gonna pad a saddle, I’d make it smaller than the saddle so it only covered the upper legs and butt area. That way you don’t add any extra material to your hip bones to create potential for pinch

Sounds good. That was kinda my plan. Make it a little smaller so it would fit inside the the outside edges.

I gave a friend putting a removable piece of fleece on inside of my flex. See whst happens.
really should be warmer

Interesting thread. I’ve never found a need for it - cushion and warmth being the benefits?

Yes. 2nd line of my original post. It get a little cold up here in MT.

Now I see what your issue is. You need something to augment your saddle so you are warmer while hunting from it, right?

I live in central Florida and despite the long season, it probably averages over 80 degrees for most of it. Your problem isn't comfort and warmth it is that you live in the wrong state! Good luck.

Yes sir down here in Florida, we sweat it out way more than most. For that reason mesh saddles and tech lite hunting clothes are a must

I couldn't handle FL in the summer. Too much humidity. Plus your deer are too little. LOL It Hardly gets over 90 here in the summer plus no humidity. I Love SWFL in the winter and spring. Your fishing is awesome. However, if you want to hunt nice deer AND elk, MT is a hard place to beat. Plus the fishing here aint' half bad either.
