Physical Fitness

Well I've tried different things for getting or staying in good physical condition. Fire academy, gym membership, running, sports, home workouts DVD, crossfit. But what I like the most is calisthenics. Pull ups, push ups, squats, dips. Using my own bodywieght, I can workout anywhere. Its a lot better on my joints and it's cheap. And I'm in better shape than I have ever been in. I also eat pretty good most of the time.

Old post, but I’m an FNG, so here is my response.

I lift six days a week, and have changed the majority of what I do over to functional movements, since I’ve had two spine surgeries. To be honest, the gym is the only reason I’m able to get out of bed each day. I tried and tried for a long time to continue lifting as I did when I played football and as I did in the Army, but I was in a ton of pain still, and looked more like a 95 year old man when I walked. Functional movements have helped me a lot, even though I still have a lot of pain. Cardio is tough for me, as the Army has a way of destroying knees and ankles too, lol. I can do some moderate hikes with weight on my back.

Diet is egg whites for breakfast, chicken, rice, and spinach for lunch, and ground venison, rice (or sweet potato), and broccoli for dinner. Protein shakes post workout and before bed.

I hold steady at 245-250 lbs and about 12-14% BF.

Funny that this post comes back up today. I ran the Bonefrog Challenge Obstacle course race yesterday - the Navy SEAL Obstacle race. My only OCR of the year so far. And by run, I actually mean it...lol normally when I do these I end up walking 60% of the time. But yesterday I brought a friend who's a distance runner (and former IDF) who literally pushed me. Any time I started to slow he'd throw a hand on my back and nudge me forward. Lol

I nailed every obstacle except one. Which felt good. For a 50 year old to be laughing over 10 foot walls, climbing ropes, and monkey bars....i feel pretty good about where I'm at. Just gotta work on the running.

I should add it was a honor to get my finisher medal from New England UDT Association members (retired SEALs). Handshakes, hugs and thank yous for their service & sacrifices...truly awrsome and humbling.
