Pods For A Cause (milkweed)

230 in this box. The pods started splitting today. Still not quite dry enough to ship, but they are close. Probably send them out next week.
All mailing envelops for guys on the list are addressed and ready to go. Btw, anyone know 7x57_ Mauser? He wanted pods but never gave me shipping info. Tell him I need it, or I'm passing him by.

Hey thom, those are a type of APHID, we have a similar species here in TN on our milkweed as well. Most of the milkweed utilizing species of aphid are invasive from Asia. There is a lot of info online about them but a consensus is you can mist them with rubbing alcohol to kill. What I’ve been doing is taking my picked pods and soaking in water with dish soap, it kills the insects and I believe helps dissolve and distribute some of that oil that was making your early picked pods not float right. Then I take them, make a slice through the skin only, and leave them in the sun. They dry out crazy fast with this method and float like a dream. You should try it with a few and see if you like it!

Thanks for the info on the aphids. I actually did a pod soak in permethrin with these. I am bound and determined to not ship a pest to another part of the country that may not already have that pest.
As far as dish soap dissolving the sap, I'm skeptical that it will do the job. If I get the sap on my hands if I pick before they are mature, dish soap doesn't wash it off effectively, but the sap really isn't a problem if pods are handled correctly. The pods do go thru some sort of natural drying process as they mature. The floaters of those pods that I picked very early, still won't expand. After 30+ years of milkweed use, I'm still learning a few things about pod harvesting. Doing this has been beneficial to me as well.

And every pod has a seam where it will naturally split. I just give them a little squeeze on that seam and they will split (even when green) so there is no need for slicing with a knife. I split them, lay them out for a few days and when the split starts to really open up on their own, I add the rubber bands. That is the stage where these pods are now.

Hey Tom, just curious (since I don’t have milkweed here and know nothing about harvesting) but why the rubber bands? You are holding closed the natural split? Is that holding them back from drying too quick or something?

Tom mentioned it in an earlier post. If they burst open, some of the floaters will get away. Keeping them closed keeps all of it inside.

When they eventually split fully, they open-up wide and the floaters will be totally out of control. They will make a major mess in you truck, house, tubs, pockets or wherever you have them. The rubber band needs to remain on the pod until all the floaters are used-up.

I know some guys like to remove the floaters from the pod and stuff them into another container. I just don't get that. The floaters are perfectly contained, organized and protected in the pod. Why remove the floaters and jam them into another container? Floaters drift the best when they are pristine. Each one of the hairs should be nice and straight and fully expanded. When they get stuffed into a secondary container, the hairs get crinkled and deformed and the floater doesn't perform as well.

Got ya, makes sense. I got some before from eBay that we’re just in a sandwich bag. So you are shipping them in the pod to use directly from there. Good deal, thanks for the bit of knowledge!

Pods are popping.
I drove past one of my patches today and was surprised to see how many pods were split open and blowing floaters.
I will be picking this weekend.
Curious how you keep from getting the sap all over you when picking? I always make a damn mess

I should have brought a 2nd bucket!
This 5 gal bucket full is a tiny fraction of what was available to pick. When these are dry, I will start shipping.

Here are a few pics photos from this morning.
I'm not sure what kind of bugs they are, but I need to deal with them before I ship. I don't want to transport a pest. I will bake the pods or maybe do a soak in permethrin. Any suggestions?

They're a very good attractant for monarch butterflies. That's a monarch caterpillar there.

That is some nasty sap. I cut the stem with pruners and let them drop into a bag.
The sap is not an issue in a couple days after they are picked.
One way to gage when they are almost mature is to lightly scrape something across the pod when they are still on the plant...sap will instantly ooze from the surface of the pod. When the sap oozing starts to diminish late in the season, then they are about ready to pop.
