Pods For A Cause (milkweed)

This thread being revived made me notice that Barry Wensel contributed, I didn't realize that before.
Well, it was kinda a trade thing.
When we had the secret santa, I contacted Barry about buying a video from him for the santa exchange. He wouldn't accept payment for it, so I asked him if I could donate the value of the video in his name, and also send him (Barry) a package of pods. So, in a round about way, Barry is one of us pod contributors.

I can send you a lot of it as soon as it ripens if you need. We have lots of it here in ohio
Thanks brother.
So far, getting the stuff hasn't been an issue. Tons of it growing around here.
But I have seen large patches of it that just aren't up to the quality that I want. Not all pods are created equal.
I've always been able to find enough acceptable pods but Mother Nature has the last word. Drought, bugs, etc could effect availability...never know when I may need help getting enough.

My neighbor has milkweed invading his hayfield and he is on a mission to eradicate it. It was one of my better spots for picking it. Luckily, I have several other spots. But I will keep your offer in mind. Thank you.

Just an fyi,
Thru this process and the contacts and orders, I've come to realize that there are quite a few military members on Saddlehunter. Many of the donations have come from service members...as if they haven't already done enough for the cause.
We need to extend to them our deepest gratitude for everything they do for us.
These heroes sacrifice everything for us so that we can enjoy our freedoms.
Just saying thank you just doesn't seem to be enough.

If anyone has donated for pods and hasn't received them, PLEASE let me know.
I don't believe I've missed any requests, but I just want to make sure.
Orders keep trickling in and I want to stay on top of it. Got another $180 in donations in the last 2 weeks!
You guys are killing it. Thanks!

I received my pods last week and forgot to thank you again. This will be my first season trying milkweed instead of the “puffer” haha. Excited to try it out. But even more excited about the cause you’re supporting. Thanks again!

Question for the milk weed gurus. How does one extract the floaters to put in a canister. I don't really want to carry the actual pod with me

Knowing me I would crush a pod way easier than a Tylenol bottle lol I don't want to waste any
Those pods are way more durable that you might think.
Plus, they have no lid to deal with every time you need a floater...no lid to drop either.
I've been religiously using milkweed for 30 years. When all things are considered, there is no better way to utilize these floaters. Leave them in the pod and put the pod on a clip.

@Allegheny Tom do you pull the seed before you toss?
Yes.
About half the time, the seed remains in the pod when I pluck the floater.
If the seed does stay attached, it pops off easily with a little pinch where the seed meets the floater.
I don't drop the seed without deforming it so it isn't viable. But I've never had any seeds show signs of being viable, anyway.
The risk of the seeds being viable in a fully dried, 1 year old is very rare.

I have my left hand cargo pocket stuffed full of milkweed fluff at all times. I probably toss 15-25 floaters at once, and it's very interesting to see how they each can take very different currents in certain situations. Some will hook left around a tree and float up, others will hook right and drift down, and others yet will continue straight on out in a flat line.
Pretty crazy to think about when trying to determine "wind" direction.

MIlkweed is so prevalent around here that I just pick it in the field whenever I need it. It's everywhere.
