I'm going say that I will be more successful this year. I only say that because I am starting to have a better understanding " or so I think" of how I should be approaching things in the preseason, during season and post season. Now does that mean that I can say without doubt that I will harvest a Deer this year? That would be a no! Success for me will be paying attention to what I have hoped to have learned from my past seasons and focus on areas that I already know hold Deer. I don't bow hunt yet, so our early season and opening of the season is bow and primitive weapons. I figure this will give me a chance to do some observation sits without a weapon and force me to just watch and listen and learn. Going out now and just walking property that I intend to hunt this year and get a better lay of the land so to speak. So I can actually learn the hows and whys is going to be my biggest tool set. If I can put myself in a position to actually see more Deer, then to me that will be my success.
I learned more about deer and hunting in my first season as a bowhunter than I learned in 20 years of gun hunting. Bowhunting forces you to adapt and learn. I can highly recommend it. It can be a little like golf. You can spend a fortune or get into it pretty cheap. The bottom line is, equipment doesn't make the hunter. I hunted my first season with a borrowed bow that was at least 15 years old. I still got a deer and I was hooked.

I've got family health issues that kept me from scouting at all this spring and will limit my time in the woods this fall. I could be more successful, but it would come down to luck.

More successful. I’m moving to an area with more available tags and pigs to chase as well. I’ll also be making a couple trips during prime time for WI, GA, and AL.

Oh, and I quit my job so I’ll have more time to hunt.

More. Two years in a row, no buck in archery, so that's quite a slump for me. I'm due. Hunted more last year than I ever have in my life and came close a few times, just didn't happen.

I also don't feel any pressure anymore or gauge success by any other measure than enjoying it and felt last season was successful even though I didn't tag a buck. Course I want to fill tags and the bigger the better, but I always hunted like I have something to prove. Idk if it was seeking validation or my competitive nature or just growing up or what but I truly don't give a rat's asse anymore what anyone else does or thinks.

I had that happen a couple seasons ago too. We lost a ton of summer sausage, a lot of pork, and some flounder as well. Thankfully all the back strap had already been cooked. Hopefully those electrical issues don’t mess up your season this year

The GFCI is now outside where it belongs, and the outlet the freezer is plugged into is upstream. We're cookin
More. Why would I ever immediately think this year would be worse than the previous? Confidence in one's ability is important.

Is your success concrete and measured against itself? Or is it more malleable and compared against other "successes" or "failures".

Put another way:

I killed 7 deer last year. If I kill 3 this year, is that absolutely a failure? In a vacuum, you might say yes. But what if I know going into the year, my odds of killing more than one deer are low, due to time/money/other restraints. If I killed three deer in light of that, it would be a success, no?

This isn't a confidence thing. I'm looking for the variables that other folks are attributing their successes and failures to. And also, what motivates them.

There aren't many more self confident monkeys out there chasin' deers than me. And I answered "no".

Don’t think it’s possible to do worse unless I just don’t buy tags and stay at home ha. First Fall in two years that school won't be interfering. But our next little one is due around Halloween. Hoping to get access to property in a reduction zone so I can start my season a few weeks earlier. Otherwise i'm going to try to hunt hard starting 10/1 because I don't know how much i'll get out once the baby is here.

Ah, that's different. I'm not a numbers guy, could care less if I kill 1 or 7 (though I do want to fill the freezer). Guess I don't quantify my success, I'll tell you at the end if I was successful but I'm certainly going into it with the mindset that I will be.

I voted less bc I killed my best deer ever with and bow and killed my second best buck with a gun. Those 2 are gonna be hard to beat much less in the same year. Add that to 2 does and a bobcat. Gonna be tough to surpass. But I'll have a blessed year I believe.

That’s the ultimate paradox of huntjng. Breeding is difficult when you’re never home.

I pushed it off as long as I could ha. I wanted to be done with school (August) before they arrived and was just hoping it would take a little longer than our first one, it didn't.

Far more successful. Got a new job making gobs of money with a 3 day work week. Depending if I do OT or not I'll be in the woods 3-4 days a week.
2nd, I'm off the first two weeks of November.
3rd, the public I hunted last year really kicked my butt for almost all of October. I struggled like hell to get on game, despite the insane amount of bucks on camera. Took lots of trial and error and time on stand to figure out how the deer used the land and why. It got really good for me in November. Let a ton of them go but between me playing on my phone and my beast stand squeaking, I blew it on a giant the last day.
4th, despite it getting good for me towards the end, my motivation had really started to die down by Nov. Hunting this remote public requires AT LEAST 1.5 hr walk one way. Some spots required 2.5 hrs one way. It became very hard to stay focused and remain on stand till dark, knowing if I left the stand at 530 I wouldn't be back to the car till almost 8. I got permission this year to access the private that borders it with an ebike. So now my access will go from 2 hrs on average to 20 minutes. Plus I get to sleep in now.
I believe I have a bright season ahead

i said no. I tagged two nice bucks.... 10pt and 11pt with some junk growin last season and one lunged another 10 that i still have showing up (hes my target this season, excited what hes gonna be). So i doubt im gonna repeat that. Also lost my good lease (only hunted there once a month but it had nice deer on it) with no poaching pressure. I think its gonna be a close call/lots of slickheads kinda season. I dont wanna get my hopes up. If i shoot one mature buck i will be absolutely thrilled. That one lunged 10 is P&Y if everything grows back the same or better. Im sure i'll get a bunch of does but thats becoming more work than fun with my back and hip issues. They are like roaches in MD.

I've started to answer this thread a couple times but struggled how to define more or less successful.

Last year I killed three deer with my recurve, two whitetail does and my first Sika stag on my first ever Sika hunt. I enjoyed the heck out of that weekend hunting with @redsquirrel and @Bigterp.

Opening weekend I helped my 14 yr old nephew track and recover his first Trad buck. I was also able to film my Dad shooting his first trad deer in over a decade on the same day and in the same spot that I killed one of my does. And then a few weeks later I was able to film @Red Beard shooting his first ever trad deer.

I'm going to have to say less successful. It will be hard to top how enjoyable last year was.

Unless of course my 12 yr old son starts practicing a little more with his recurve and kills his first Trad deer this coming year. That might top last year.
