I wasnt allowed to compete last year at my local archery tournaments because I cleaned house the year before
I wish they did that in the Gate river run lol we between 2008 and 2012 the same guy won 3 times and finished second once

I don’t care if I’ve been practicing everyday for 6 months. No way am I shooting at my truck lol. 0 yards, no bet, not taking the shot.

I voted 40 yds. because I'm very confident in my equipment and my capability, not ego, facts... I also do all of my own bow work, and have done this at a professional level for over 15 years. My bow is not sitting on my wall, to just pick up, if something needs to be done. The work would have been done already lol. Again, not bragging, and I have pics/witnesses to prove it, but on a good day (for me) I can usually keep a 3-5" group @ 100 yds. (not willing to shoot that off the hood of my truck tho haha).

So here's my mental reversal. I have never shot a deer, with a bow, beyond the long range of 28 yds. Most of my shots are sub-15yds. with quite a few less than 10yds. I would feel "ethically comfortable" shooting an animal at 40yds. or less in "perfect" conditions, in the woods. Usually hunting is not conducive to "perfect" conditions or scenarios, and there's a lot that can happen on a live and aware animal. I'm fairly "seasoned" as a hunter, although I don't think that should be based solely on number of harvests lol.

I'll vote 30.

Honestly, at 50+ my eye sight isn't good enough to be that accurate. I do pretty well that far out shooting at 3d targets, because I can use the body as a reference for aiming point, but shooting spots is too hard to see.

All that to say, I muffed an 18yd shot on a STUD opening weekend last year and sliced right across the backstrap. Even after running through the "Aim Low" speech I always give myself. :sob:

I put 40. I don't remember the last time I went that long without shooting. I practice out to around 50 every week for my class in 3D and if the weather is bad I'll just shoot spots at 20 under the shed. I remember a day that I couldn't imagine shooting passed 25 because every where I hunted you didn't need to shoot them further than that.

I voted over 50. I am lucky to live with some space. I shoot a couple 100 arrows a week and usually start at 40 yards. I shoot a lot at 80 yards and can go to 103 without moving my target. Many times I walk out and only shoot one arrow at 103. My target spots are a 3” piece of duct tape.

So I’m resurrecting this thread to change my vote. I have not shot a bow In 2021. I picked up my new bow yesterday and it was tuned and in the block when I left the shop. Got home went straight to the backyard range. Not counting the 3 arrows it took to fine tune my react 4-pin at 10 yards, it took me a half dozen arrows to hit a 3” circle at 20 yards. I mean they were still killing shots, probably, just not technically a bulls eye. So I changed my vote to 10 yards if my meal depended on me making the shot. Now in my defense, new bow and 9+ months of no shooting other than test driving at the store.

You’re in recurve/longbow territory now and they’re a blast to shoot!
