I voted for 30. I regularly go a month or so without shooting my compound. Easy to do when you enjoy a recurve as much as I do! When I do pull out the compound I typically have no problem drilling them at 30. Anything beyond is a crapshoot.

Out of curiosity, why do you shoot that first shot at 20 yards?
That's just the standard yardage and it is my preferred shot distance. I always try to set up for an 18 to 20 yard shot if possible. I don't like em" to be too far or too close. I have however killed a few directly under me and I killed a big doe at 49 yards once.

This is an interesting question and I’m glad I took time to give my number because at first I was going to say 40 yards knowing I can make that shot in a 6” circle on a range under ideal conditions but not knowing the conditions of when and how this will take place my number is 20 yards because regardless of conditions I will take your money.
Time since my last practice is not a factor my years of shooting and working on form along with muscle memory I can make this shot everyday , any day , any time cold shot or my last shot.
My bow is a machine I invested good money and time into it will be ready without a doubt.
Funny how this question reflects my hunting setup along with my answer I have 1 single pin set to 20 yards and if you walk in that distance you have problems if I like your horns lol

Picked up my buddies compound last year. I have bad shoulders so i shoot crossbow. His was 70 LBS. I pull back on a 50yd target and he begins to talk my ear off...Hold for a while and release to a 2" bullseye. For some reason i've always been able to shoot compounds very well and i have maybe 20 shots from a compound in my life. All hovering around bullseye.

Several years ago i asked my brother to use his compound to hunt deer. I wanted to try before i buy knowing my shoulders were junk. He suggested i practice. So i hit the bullseye 3x from 30 yds..Appears i was good to go. Few weeks later punched my first doe with a 35yd double lung after a long hold. That doe was the 4th time i'd shot a compound. Blessed i guess.

Shooters shoot

I put 20 yards, but I would take the bet out to 25...

I usually stop shooting my bow after the close of archery season in November and don't pick back up until March or so.

For me, 30y is the hardest to be consistent at and shoot 40y better than 30y.

I noticed I aim differently between 20y and 40y with 20y being more of a reactionary shot and 40y being a more focused aim. At 30y, I have to remember to take a reactionary shot even though I want to focus my aim. It's hard to explain it but if I do that that and stay relaxed, I am capable of 1" per 20y. Notice I said "capable" and not "consistent".

I'm a daily shooter I like to shoot a dozen before work and 5 or 6 dozen after work some days it doesn't happen but like last Saturday I shot 15 dozen. I feel like I'm not shooting good if i cant hit a 1 inch group at 20 a 2 inch at 40 and a 4 at 60 that's why I went with over 50 but I'm kinda cheating i dont take a 3 month break. I shoot most of my shots at 60 to warm up then random shots after that. Before I went to a heavy arrow I was shooting out to 110 every day

Wait some of you can hit the bullseye at 30 or 40 yards even when you practice? Man I must be top 5 worst archer in this forum. I am pretty sure I’m happy to hit the target , if I hit the bullseye, I’d swear something was wrong with my bow!
