Pop-up 38 by Mystery Ranch

They are getting a little more refined which i like but i wish they were more modular so could swap bags! Would be super simple and ive seen some guys on here actually do it. Im in the market for another pack so ill wait till some more info on this comes out but im thinking for the same or less weight i can buy a kifaru or exo and have unlimited options.

I wish kifaru would make a folding/collapsible frame. Their system is great with tons of stylish bags, but carrying a pack with 26" stays in the brush country is almost as bad as carrying a treestand around.

My next elk pack will be a SG, been curious about those for some time.

i guess it really depends on what your using it for. Ive read kifaru will do anything from a 22-28" frame. Im looking at 24" frame for this exact reason as well as the exo frame which is adjustable 1.5". With the exo i could run small frame and go 24-25.5 depending on what im doing. I also have looked at the SG and they are another top contender for me but like the layouts of the kifaru/exo a little more. Its hare nut to swallow to get a full kit but im sick of not being satisfied haha.

I'm thinking of going to Kifaru as well, but feel the same way about a folding frame. Once you've enjoyed the portability of a folded frame with the load lifting abilities of the extended frame, it's hard to want anything different.

MR will be one of my first stops when I'm there. I was told earlier this summer that they were coming out with this pack. I was also told that they'll offer a daypack lid compatible with the Guide Light MT bags.

Overkill for the kind of hunting I do but looks like a nice pack.

Pole system is awesome. Also really like that the lower compression straps aren’t tucked into the pouches. The stretch woven pockets are nice too. Would have loved to see a quieter material. The material is definitely durable but it’s loud. That 38 looks even louder. When he opened up the top compartment is sounded like he was opening up a bag of chips. New pop up 28 is a solid choice for whitetail hunting. I’ll pass on the 38.

Is it just me or does the 38 not seem that much larger than the 28...especially since they are listing the load capacity at 44L??

For those folks paranoid that cordura is too loud, I'll warn they really aren't going to like that top shroud on the 38 bag. It's more "crinkly" than the cordura. That material is on my Metcalf bag and when it's cold, it gets worse. The minimal and rather natural noise doesn't bother me, but I know to some its an issue.

5.3 lbs? Kinda heavy...

Compared to what that has an external frame and meat shelf? It's not a pack I'd recommend to someone that's going for the suburban minimalist vibe, but if there are comps that are lighter I'd look into them.

According you the MR site, the material is the same. I think it just seemed that way because the popup 28 is not really opened up in the video, mostly just unzipped.

I know I am in the minority here but I like a big pack. I hunt in PA (coldish winters) and hike in a good piece over elevation changes. I like the idea of putting my outers, as well as multiple base layers, game bags, hydration pouch, food for an all-day sit, binos, saddle, etc inside the 38 pack and getting dressed at or near my stand location. I would theoretically put my RR platform and WE stepps in the overload shelf.

Also... check this out- If you search for "Pop up" on mystery ranch's website a new Mule bag shows up with the Pop ups. It also includes this language in the description: "For those who already have a Guide Light MT™ Frame or a new, 2020 POP UP Frame, the MULE is a 23 L pack sack that attaches to create a workhorse hybrid for multiple hunting applications."

Does this mean I could buy a PU 38 and switch to the bag to the mule if I wanted a smaller pack for a short hunt?? It doesn't mention bag switching anywhere on the Pop up pages for 38 or 28.

That would be a pretty sweet early season setup (mule) to switch later to a rut/ rifle season (38) weather for me.

If I could have the 38 and the mule bag for the popup frame I would be set.

The 28 and 38 are the same material. They are both cordura. Not a deal breaker but when It’s cold the pack will make noise. We’re taking about the top part to the 38 here. That’s a different material. You can see it’s a different color/texture. If it’s cold and quiet it’s going to be loud. I love my 28. Mystery ranch seems like a great company that makes awesome packs. That being said I do not understand why they would add a noisy material to a hunting pack. I guess there used for camping or elk as well as whitetail so there covering there bases. You can access the 38 through the side. Alternative, but not problem solved. Just my opinion.

To me, this just seems like it fits in the same category as A LOT of other frame packs on the market. Whereas the pop-up 18 fit a category of it's own. (a compact daypack with heavy load capabilities if you needed it.) Unless you are self filming or going on 3 day hunts, what would the average saddle hunter possibly need this much space for? You're going to be lashing heavy layers to the outside regardless. I don't think I could think of enough gear to fill this up and I carry 40' of rappel rope! I'm glad I got the 18 before they phased it out.
