Post season workout encouragement thread! 2022 EDITION!!!!!

Man how fast you can fall off the wagon. I haven’t ran or anything since mid July. We’ve been in the process of moving out of my old house and into the in-laws, bought a house, working, having a 1 year old, now starting the process of moving back out of the in-laws and into the new house. It’s been quite the adventure and I’ve had barely enough time to sleep let alone exercise. Once the moving ends and can get somewhat settled, then I think I can start exercising again regularly like I was. Now that I know I can start at any time, I think it’ll be easier to get back into the swing of it again. I’m happy others have stuck to it, sometimes life just gets turned upside down and you have to just set aside time to get out and hit the pavement.

I feel you, and I like your attitude. In fact, time fore to go hit the pavement and sweat it out on my lunch break.

Also- moving IS exercise and I don't envy you for having to do it twice in quick succession. And so is parenting. Your 1 year old walking? likely not yet but soon? Don't worry, you'll be plenty active for the foreseeable future, my 3 and 5 yo girls keep me busy -think of it as training, a 35 and a 45 lb "weight" that I carry around and lift up and down quite regularly!

If you get time, try to do a 10-15 minute walk once or twice a day. Doesn't sound like much, but walking is fantastic for longevity.

Figured I'd drop in on this "post season" thread since my season starts tomorrow.

I've been keeping up with running pretty well and run at least 6 miles 6 days a week. This morning I did 6.5 miles in 1 hour flat. I'm 20 pounds lighter than on 10/1/20. I feel great and I'm looking forward to the season opener tomorrow morning.

I definitely won't be able to run as much during the season. Thanks for making this thread and encouraging us!

holy MOLY i wish i'd kept up with you all, dragging my first deer out a few weeks ago was... tough! lol and she wasn't the biggest doe. I got the cart fixed so i'll have wheels next time, but those 2 mile hikes aint geting any shorter! (and i've just been getting fatter lol)

Here's what I've been up to lately.

...except the pics are too big. Wth.
Anyway, my bench max is around 260, squats are around 344. Overhead press is around 155 and I haven't had a chance to do deadlifts yet.

for anybody near a rock climbing gym... holy crud are they a good time and a good way to stay in shape... AND... all my accesories cross over to saddle hunting... carabiners (main support and accessory attachments), prussic lines, ATC.... etc... i havent actually lost a ton of weight (maybe 7 lbs) but my consistancy has shifted and im a little less smooshy now
..haha... anyway... its a great workout and very low impact... though you'll feel it in your hands for sure

If your pics are on your phone, open the pic and screenshot it, then upload the screenshot that usually works for me

BUMP! I'm back at it again baby! Tag soup this season but not for lack of trying or having chances. Had a chance at a real nice 7 point 2 weekends in a row. First weekend he was standing just over the property line I was hunting(I don't know the neighbors and it's a permission property I hunt). I had him at probably 10 yards broadside, perfect shot. I ultimately decided against shooting him because he was with a doe and she was further onto the neighbor's land. If would have shot he would have chased her further onto this mystery neighbors' land. It didn't feel right shooting onto their land so I decided against it. I'm hoping to gain permission from said mystery neighbor this spring. He was by far the best buck on the property, it was such a tease and I sort of wimped out but I don't regret it that much. Had another encounter with him the following weekend but he was not as close and not in range. That same day I had a basket 8 that was definitely within range and in my shooting lane, a little small so I let him go as well. Other than that lots of small does and a cool encounter with a curious porcupine during gun season in northern Michigan.

2021: As for the workout from last year, well lets say between selling my old house, moving to my in-laws for 3 weeks and then buying a new house(Love the new house by the way) and moving into the new house, I got out of my rhythm to say the least. Last year I did Insanity, Insanity: Asylum, and then a 12 week Insanity: Asylum/Running hybrid thing I found online that ended with a half marathon. I started Jan 5th last year and ended on July 4th weekend running a custom 13.1 mile route my buddy came up with in Holland, MI. It ended at Holland state park right at the beach.

2022: I plan to do something very similar this year(minus the whole moving thing :sunglasses:). I'm basically in the same spot as I was last year at this time, I haven't worked out since about July. I feel good but definitely not nearly in the shape I was in this past July. I plan to do it all over again and run another half marathon in July. Without the move this spring and summer, I'm really hoping to get out and scout and prep stand locations. I live a lot closer to some more desirable state land in mid Michigan as well. I had such an awesome experience with the community here supporting each other on all our offseason workout goals last year, I had to start this thread up again. Once again, anyone who wants to join in on the fun is welcome to post their progress and how it's helping their hunting goals as well(this is a hunting forum after all). Keep choppin' boys, IT'S GO TIME!

I'll re-up for sure... started running again last year but a nagging ankle injury had me put that on pause... I actually finally addressed it and had ankle surgery in Dec, so I won't be back at it for another month or so... that said... once I quit running last year, I started doing a bit more hiking and started at a rock climbing gym here in Rochester, MN... it's crazy fun and I am full on done doing unfun stuff for fitness.... I lifted weights consistently from the age of about of 14 till 31 and I'm done.... climbing and hiking will be my go to's and I may take up running a bit once my ankle is 100%... I lost about 10 lbs last year but I'll look to improve on it this year... sub 200 would be amazing

I would LOVE to learn how to rock climb and I feel like it would be such a natural transition from my love of saddle hunting/climbing trees. Shocking I know lol. Unfortunately I live in flatland USA so there's no good climbing rocks around here that I know of.

I’ve completed insanity 2 times and the 30 min 2 times in the past. But I’m in shape as in I’m a shape. At 5’6” 195 I need to drop 15 back to my fighting weight, if for nothing else other than work. I invented dad bod and I’m not proud of it. I am in. Gotta figure out what program to do though this time.

Good luck to all, I've learned the more of my life I do things more actively the better I stay in shape. I have maintained pretty well mostly just by staying away from a lot of carbs and sugar. I also do not snack anymore and rarely consume alcohol. I also have incorporated intermittent fasting, and I try to fast for 16 hours each day or 24-hour period. So, I do not eat before 12:30pm and no later than 7pm. I typically eat a low carb and no sugar lunch and dinner, eat till I'm comfortably full at each meal and that's it. Depending on what I eat, I will typically not be hungry over the 16 hour period of fast. If I do get a tinge I'll consume water or coffee. Finally, when doing this stuff, you have to create a perspective for yourself in order to keep at it. I know this next part will sound kind of silly to you at first but it seems to work for me. Try putting yourself in a place in time way before convenience, like, what did a mountain man trapper have to do every day to survive? Was he eating three squares a day out in the wild? What about a Native American warrior? Or think of yourself as a SEAL Team or Special Operations warrior downrange actively engaged. You're not Pu$$ing out eating three squares a day like a cow at a dairy farm. You're actively engaged in some kind of task or mission and food is just for maintenance. Or, if that seems too hokey, think of the coyote or fox or wolf or cougar. They are constantly looking and hunting, looking, searching and hunting doing what they must to survive. They stay in shape because they are moving and or trying to find the next meal that doesn't come around very often and each meal is a battle. I'm not saying this stuff has to be painful but we as Americans are so used to routine feedings that we've become like farm animals dependent on the system instead of doing it ourselves. Does that make sense? When I think of it that way I'm not feeling sorry for myself I'm feeling like I'm actively engaged in a mission of some kind in my mind to put the food into a lesser role or perspective. I know so many guys who can eat and drink whatever they want and never gain an ounce. I'm not wired that way so I have come up with these "perspectives" in order to keep my motivation. And it is super great when you can just about do anything you want physically during a hunting season because you have "trained" your mind this way.

I'm back in as well.

2021 - my goal in this thread was 5k in under 30 min by June or whatever month you guys had picked. By the end of 2021 I was able to do 7.5 miles in under an hour.

2022 - I'm looking to get a half marathon in by June. Not sure about time yet, since I haven't tried that long of a distance yet.

I am in again, hopefully a hit more regularly than last year. Strong work on getting us going again. Not quite done with season, goes through the end of Jan for me (archery), I hope to get out a few more times in January, otherwise I'll join you on (buck) tag soup, though I did connect with my first doe in September... She's starting to run out already though!
