Predator Platform broke on me last night

That's great to hear.

It is. I have a full setup from them and I love it so far. Haven’t hunted the platform yet because I’m using the hand climber. But when practicing on it I really like it. I think they need some public relations help but the products are awesome for the most part and they seem to be taking care of concerns that come up well. It’s not that big of a deal but I’m covered in tethered badges when hunting and I’d like to feel good about telling people that ask about them.

In my opinion, and like everyone else here, I have an one, the proper move for Tethrd would be to post a notification on their website indicating a potential problem with the Gen 1 platforms. Send an email or registered letter to all of the original buyers of Gen 1’s to notify them of a potential problem. Offer to replace the platform portion of the assembly if the owners will ship the entire assembly (minus the strap) back to Tethrd. The shipping would be on the owners of each platform and not covered by Tethrd. Tethrd should replace the platform portion onto the original owners post and return it covering the return shipping. The old Gen 1 platforms could then be recycled through their platform supplier to be melted down into the new Gen 2 platforms. Anyway, that’s my 2 cents.

I agree except I think Tethrd should cover shipping both ways. The consumer already paid for shipping on what should have been a good product. Why should they incur more costs for it to be what it should have been all along?

They clearly know they jacked up, they just don’t want to send out the only gen 2s they have. It would create more of a delay for new customers and there are competing platforms hitting the market & already on the market. They probably hope to be caught up by 2020. Right now they are behind (from what I have heard). Pretty crappy business in my opinion.
If someone gets hurt between now and then on a gen 1, I wouldn’t blame them for dropping the legal hammer on tethrd (or attempting to).

Well I’d think with all the info here about the issue and most of the owners being members here it would be easy to say they had prior knowledge and accepted the risk. They must be confident that it’s unlikely they’ll be held liable.

Every single failure I have seen was to the back corner in the exact same spot. Breaking there will not cause you to fall out of your tree and die contrary to what some seem to perceive. It sucks when it breaks but it’s a minor inconvenience more than anything. If you treat a Gen 1 as instructed it will not break. I think it’s cool they are offering to do a trade for a Gen 2 for those that are concerned but also agree they should cover shipping both ways and not pass any additional cost onto the customer.

5 broke? 1000's sold?

Anybody else think it's odd that even with the millions of Gen 1 failures we've heard about on this forum, no one has been injured? I would be curious to see how many Gen 1's were sold vs. how many truly failed. I'm not sure on the specifics of recalls and how they work but I would imagine the failure rate would have to exceed a certain percentage. Not to mention, the only time these Gen 1's are failing is while they are cam locked to the tree which not everybody does.

I know a bunch of people will say, "But it's knowingly putting someones life at risk by not recalling all Gen 1's"......I would have to disagree. First, you can't prevent stupid and if you're stupid enough to step on an aluminum platform and toe cam lock it without being properly tied/secured to the tree.....it's your fault. Second, if you are properly tied/secured to the tree the worst that can happen is the platform kick out to one side. Yes, that will scare the dog sh** out of you but you should be able to easily straighten it out or reach your climbing sticks, etc.

I stand by original statement.....if I had a Gen 1 I would take it behind the house with a hammer and break the wing. Pay $15 for shipping and get a brand new/better platform.

Agreed. For perspective let’s remember that it was floated around here plenty of times that we could all get together & pay for a run of sand casted platforms. We realized it was incredibly cost prohibitive & there would’ve been zero safety assurances of that crowd funded endeavor. I know it’s a little bit of speaking out of both sides of my mouth but when you own that project & produce them for the market place you own the liability as well.

That's what I was trying to hit at in my post above. I don't know the numbers but if I were to guess the failure rate is much lower than what is perceived on this forum......as for Tethrd (who is not a fortune 500 company), why would they accept such a huge liability by issuing a recall when nothing serious has come from the wings breaking and the issue has been resolved with the Gen 2.

I'm no lawyer but I think Tethrd would win in court 10 out of 10 times by simply saying "He/She was using the platform in a manner it was not designed to be used"......and by this I mean toe cam locking.

In summary, somebody broke another gen 1 platform. The break was in the same place as others. Tethrd doesn’t think it’s a significant safety concern and no one has gotten hurt from the breakage yet, although someone could lose their balance and shoot their eye out. Tethrd makes some products in China but only has made in the USA on their website, and they are really close to the FTC shutting them down. Tethrd also failed to let anyone know there is a gen 2 platform but it looks like they will be offering a trade in program next year. Whew! Hope I didn’t miss anything and everyone is caught up so they don’t have to read through 11 pages.

Spot on. :tearsofjoy: really makes you want to open a business, huh?

Wow ,
Just got a reply this week that the Gen 1 is an “excellent platform as long as I don’t hook or cam over harshly, follow directions “
This was on FB when asked if I could get a replacement due to the Gen 1 breaking.

I was just trying to remind of what it was like before commercially made platforms. (Assassins were 4-500 bucks if you could find one). I do disagree with the liability & toe hook argument, b/c it was promoted initially until there were a few failures. I’m not as concerned w/ the rate of failure as I am with how a known issue is being glossed over & only rectified if it breaks. I do like the trade in scenario, but the original purchasers ( I was one, but sold it before any of the issues arose) shouldn’t take a backseat to new business. All that said it’s not my business to run & market! I’m just a consumer w/an opinion (let’s not overestimate our voice)

I'm glad to hear they will exchange eventually. As of my Sept 17 email they stated they would not. Hope they do!

I was not an original Gen 1 customer but I understand where you're coming from.

The liability issue still doesn't make sense to me though. There are inherent risks that come with being 20 - 30' in a tree and standing on a platform.

Similar to the set of tires you have on your truck......if you have a blow out, you more than likely won't blame the company who made the tires. You would assume some other factor caused the issue (i.e. tread, tire pressure, pot hole, etc.). You drive every day with the inherent risk of a blow out and something serious happening.

In this case, if someone wants to put that much pressure/force on an aluminum platform they are increasing the inherent risk of any platform breaking. Alright, I'm done with this thread.

go for it, I love all your original products thus far. sink your family saving and step on out.

My post was obvious sarcasm.....meaning Ernie and Greg are the ones who took the leap and started a company to benefit us all. Now they are being criticized for something that has been corrected. I feel like some are treating them like they are unrelatable and are all about the money but they were like you and me just a few years ago and still are.

DID YOU REALLY SAY MILLIONS? Bwahahahaha! Now I know this thread is a joke.
