preseason scouting and some confusion

Been a while since I've worked with/around horses. Neighbors have horses across the road but they're downwind so can't really remember what they smelled like.

I had a small set of opera glasses (tiny little binocs) that fit right in my hand and I would look around with them at a spot that I may have thought was part of the deer.

Haha I love that you had opera glasses- that is some high class deer hunting right there! Seriously I didn’t even know they existed anymore. I only know the term from reading classic literature. Next time my friends joke that hunting is for rednecks I’m mentioning that.

LOL!!! Yeah, I really dumbed them down too!! They were the only thing I could afford, they were given to my mom from her dead Aunt's estate and I kind of hocked 'em from my mom's stuff she was "going through." I covered the lenses with masking tape and spray painted them a tan camo as they had two reflective silver bands around the top and bottom of the roof prism type design. Funny when you're a kid the stuff you worry about. They worked pretty good though. I think they were like 1.5 or 2 power at the most. Good enough for me at the time. Hey, I had binoculars!!!

I have never noticed a deers smell. what does it smell like and how will i know if its a deer
It smells almost like horses and cows....more like goats... kind of, but a little different. Do yourself a favor and sometime when a buddy bags a deer or you bag one, you'll notice the smell right away. Smell that deer... that's the smell. There is a scent out now I believe called Ever Calm or something like that..... to me it smells just like whitetails. Also you can go to a deer farm and you'll smell it too. Just like turkey's, especially in the spring. You can smell turkey's sometimes too believe it or not. Wet feather smell.

You're the same damn pilgrim I've been hearin' for ten days and smellin' for three! -"Bear Claw" Chris Lapp (Will Geer's character). Jeremiah Johnson 1972 Film starring Robert Redford.
