Public land etiquette

There is no “my spot” on public. I try to be courteous to people but at the end of the day everyone has a right to be out there

I don't mind if a guy goes out and puts up one tree stand. But on one public spot I am hunting, about 250 acres, their are 5 tree stands i know of and I have only seen one used one time. I think the others are abandon. Some guys are putting up multiple tree stands taking multiple spots. TN went to a new no tree stands left over night on public. I wish KY. would do the same.

We have a week but it's not enforced. I could make a good living selling stands and deer carts.

Public land, public stand is the law in MN. Especially mid-week I'll hunt unoccupied stands if they look safe and well-sited. I try to be a good neighbor and will absolutely move if the guy who hing the stand comes along... that said if he's a jerk I might mess with him a little.

IIRC stands can be hung a week before season and have tk be out a week afterwards before the COs and rangers start confiscating them... in fact both of my ladder stands were left on a timber lease and had to come out before the loggers came in.

I don't like relying on GPS. I use it, sure, but mostly against the possibility I get turned around in a swamp or the dark. I never flag my route in to a place, but I absolutely use some sort of marker when I'm on a tough blood trail. Just the idea of guiding another hunter in to a place I scouted is enough to keep me from flagging my route. That said I'll probably mark trees with presets in them.

The only way I’ll leave a stand on a tree on public overnight, is if I hunt it one evening and plan on being back in it way before daylight the next morning.

I will stage a few around under dead falls and cover them up with leaves….sometimes I can’t even find it and I know it’s there.

I’ve had mixed luck in my first couple years back into hunting and only having access to public land. The good; another guy and I talked about where we were trying to go to turkey hunt, it was the same place and he had scouted far more than I had, when I said I’d just try a different area he offered to just set up together. Had someone run their dogs through (twice, different areas) but I consider that a nothing burger; it stinks but it happens, it’s public. Only bad/uncomfortable I had was an older gentleman who came in about 2 hours after I’d been in a spot. I waved a bunch, he continued to walk right to me. Set up less than 10 yards from me and said “I’ve set here anytime I hunt for 23 years, I ain’t changing just because you found a spot today.” As he lit up a Marlboro Red I decided to just move on.

All in all part of my reason to get the saddle, I need to go to more places people aren’t but I won’t likely ever be the confrontational one either way. It’s just a blessing being out there and I’m not going to let someone who isn’t realizing that ruin my time.
Brother, I would've moved about 30 yards upwind of that guy and dropped a hammer.
