Public Land Hunting VA: Oakley Forest WMA?

I am finishing up my first season of not only saddle hunting, but bow and deer hunting. I was successful in harvesting a buck on some private land. I am planning on trying my hand at public land in Virginia's WMA's next season.

I live in Warrenton, VA and will start scouting out CF Phelps. But I am also interested in Oakley Forest WMA. Has anyone hunted there? Any suggestions?

Thank you

I've cyber scouted it just a little bit. I have some property at Lake Anna and spend a lot of time down there striper fishing. Oakley is the closest WMA to me. My plan is to find some places down there to hunt on the weekends I'm down there but I just haven't committed to figuring it out yet.

I want to try out Oakley some next season also. I have done a little scouting on the maps there, just didn't get to make it there this season. I'm about 2 hrs from Oakley.

I have only done e-scouting as well. It does look like there are some promising areas. I read somewhere that the land used to belong to a hunt club.

Glad to see there are some other saddle hunters near me. I currently hunt in the Fairfax County deer management program, but the older I get the less I want to drive an hour to hunt. I'm moving out a little west of Fredericksburg off of rt. 3 and am interested the Oakley WMA. Would anyone be interested in doing a group scout or something? I've never public land hunted and could use some tips from the more experienced hunters.

I'm in Loudoun and haven't hunted whitetail on Phelps or Oakley, but at least on Phelps the turkey can be big hit or bust. I'm eyeing Oakley for some spring gobbler running and gunning - hope to cover some ground and see exactly what's there.

Did anyone end up hunting/scouting the Oakley WMA? Looking at going out there for the first time ever and looking for sign and setting up on Monday.

Never hunted a WMA before so I'm a little nervous, but thankfully it's not gun season yet.

I never made it down for spring gobbler but wished I did, had no luck at my other locations!

Best of luck to you - let us know how things turn out!

I hunted Oakley before the state acquired the land. It was under QDMA management as a hunt club. I did not have a lot of luck on the property but the deer are there. When I looked at it as a WMA, it looked like a lot of walking as there were only a couple parking lots. Those that like to walk will love it.

I know this an old post but anyone have any luck out here just moved out here and wanting to see its worth a trip out there.
