Public land trail cameras

The hardest thing I have found to camo and has given away more cameras than anything else. The STRAP. You can see a strap around a tree from 60 yards away.
I do like your style though!
Why don’t you use a thin piece of stainless steel wire? Paint the wire....virtually invisible, wire don’t even rust. Really like the fishing line idea that others are using.

I don't camo in the camera - I usually place it 10' or so off the ground to get them up out of casual reach.
I also replace the straps with camo paracord, and I use these Linelock things from my hammock guy:
I tie a bowline on one end of the paracord, run it through the camera, and put the Linelock on the other. This gives me a quick way to cinch the camera to a tree. I rollup up whatever excess there is and stuff it behind the camera.

I came across a camera recently that was on with tie wire. Looked good, I didn't see the camera until I was right on top of it. Some good strap alternatives in this thread!

I've never been one to put cameras up on public land but I stuck a handful of them out a year ago. Haven't had a chance to retrieve them so I'm curious which ones (if any) will be left. More curious what pics could be on them after all this time. I told my wife I really need to get back out there and get them. The last time I went, the road was totally washed out and I couldn't get to them easily.

Missouri has taken care of that issue, can’t use them on public land.
Unless on "National Forest" land. I don't understand that rule anyway. I see more cameras hung on state ground too.

As for the attachment method, I've had a couple cams stolen that were python cable locked and up in a tree. I also lost a key one time to hang on and ended up sawing the cable lock with a multitool saw, surprisingly easy. So don't trust every lock.

I heard on the southern outdoorsman a week or so ago they mentioned using zip ties. I had 5 cameras(3 cell) out all season up high with the original straps. 4 cameras were still there, I haven't seen a person on any of them. The 5th camera i haven't retrieved yet. I put them in thick areas where I believe deer travel and where I dont see hunter sign.

I just buy the cheap Tasco ones from Walmart. Hang them high and a long ways back in.

To hide the strap, I’ve been using the thinnest cord I can find and just hitching it to itself a few times.

Good idea - a daisy chained piece of amsteel or para probably would suffice

I lock my cameras and if someone is going to mess with it they are going to have to break it or use wire cutters. I don’t worry about hiding them too much. The trained eye can catch about anything. Plus I don’t want my sd card checked by someone else. I check peoples card if they leave it there for me to check. Never steal anything though except some intel.

Thats kinda scumbaggy...

Easy there slugger. I don’t go in someone’s garage either. Let’s not get carried away. The area I was scouting had a stand prehung a month before season in a zone you have to remove them daily so there was some motive involved. I’ll agree probably not a great practice.

It was a figure of expression, not literal.

Just saying, if I walked into the woods and saw someone just "checking my sd card", I would have a serious problem with that and I'm sure you would, too. Your intentions may not be malicious, but put yourself in the other persons' shoes.

Yeah i suppose. I can’t really imagine putting a camera on public without locking it and in that case you have nothing to worry about with those viscous sd card checkers ;)

I guess I should clarify this isn’t something I make a habit of doing. It’s something that happened around the time I was thumbing through this post. I do appreciate your concern for my well-being.

Yup, 40lb green braid works great. Just cut it and restring it when you move the cam. I also bring a stick with me and go higher than a person could typically manage. Using brush or bushes works very well too. No one looks in a shrub for a camera...

It’s also somewhat douchebaggish to call someone out as kinda scum baggy.

thats like, your opinion man. You are the reason people have to go through all the hassle of concealing cameras. you can call me whatever you want, still a scumbag
