Question about short bows

I am currently thinking of getting a mathews v3 27, with my draw at 28.5. I have never used a D loop before but want to so I'm wondering if people have problems with them especially on steep angle strings, would they have a tendency to slide over time? Thanks

I have the Matthews Triax. 28" A2A and use a D-loop. In fact, I've used a d-loop on every compound bow that I've had. I have a 26" draw length and have never had an issue with steep angles and d-loops sliding over time.

D loop sliding shouldn't be an issue. Steep string angle is definitely a thing. I've heard that if your draw length is longer than the axle to axle, you could have a string angle problem. I'm 29" draw, shot my old DXT fine with an a2a slightly longer but when I test shot the V3 27, it was too steep of a string angle and I didn't like it. Go shoot that V3 and you will know right away if the string angle bothers you or not.

Thank you, I've shot a couple including the 31" but i think the 27 felt better, course I'm a little nervous about it being less forgiving for being shorter from what people say. I don't like to shoot more than 30yds max while hunting so I'm on the fence about it. My current Mathews i bought in 2003....that just sounds crazy... so I've been thinking about updating

The 27 is a shooter. It’s crazy how short it is and how stable it holds. The d loop isn’t an issue but make sure to use soft nock points. They will help with nock pinch. Enjoy!

I shoot a triax 28” with 28.5” draw. Mine moved. It’s a simple fix when you tie them in and super glue.

Doesn’t sound crazy to me I’m rocking a Mathews FX I bought brand new in 1998 LMAO, maybe this will be the year I get talked into a new one, I’m left handed so it makes everything a PITA to try, I’m just so used to that old bow I hate to switch!

Many folks (including pro compound shooters) put tie in nocks points inside their d-loops. . It allows you to remove the d loop and tie another without changing your tune and will prevent what you are worried about.

I have a 30in DL. I was just able to test out the V3 31 and the 27. I just sold the 31 despite being told by Mathews dealers and others in the industry the 27 is too small etc. I love the 27. It fits me and my DL and brain and whatever else you want to try to call it. As mentioned above, try it out and you will know instantly.

Just got the V3 27 a couple days before we left on a long trip. Can’t wait to get back home and shoot it.

I shoot a 20” ATA Gearhead bow. 28.5” draw. I did as raisins mentioned above. No issues at all.

I usually tie a 3 knot nock up top and 5 knot one below arrow with around 1/16" of play in the nock at brace. At full draw in a draw board, I can remove the arrow without pinch. The mild asymmetry in the size of the tied in nocks causes the release to ride slightly high in the d loop and the string where the nock attaches in slightly angled down. This causes my arrow to not lift off the rest under circumstance and is said to make bows with dropaway rests slightly easier to tune.

Bowmar and Dudley both have videos on this on youtube and also show the knots they use.

wow I’m considering your exact set up in terms of bow and draw. My concern is speed and power bc I’m a believer in expandables, but that’s just me.

I’ve had shoulder issues so I might be reducing pound from 65 to 60 and I shoot a heavier arrow with an insert so I’m like a half flapper half ranch fairy person lol.

so you think I would be good for speed and kinetic force for my style with your setup?

As far as expandables go...I've never used them. Do I think it would work...yes...until it didn't. That's just my opinion. I am shooting a 578 grain arrow at 215 fps and this is my first year using arrow this heavy. I did look at expandables several years ago...I think it requires 50lbs of ke to use those and I was right at 55 lbs of KE (back when KE was important to me) and decided to not use them.

Thank you guys for all the help, I was at the shop today getting new v3 set up, I had pretty much everything on it and was getting peep hight and kisser adjusted when after about 8 shots i hurt the front top part of my shoulder when drawing bow... I couldn't draw back at all so unfortunately no bow today. I could raise and move my arm but under pressure of bowstring it was to much to continue. Now I'm nursing shoulder and will see what happens

I’m using the V3 27 at a 30in DL. It says it only goes to 29.5 but Mathews is a bit long. I have 250 spine Sirius Apollo’s, 100g Ethics inserts, 200g broad heads and am getting 240fps in a Caldwell chrono.

I'm a true 29 inch draw length but I shoot a 28 inch draw length with a string loop with no problems. I worked at a bow shop for years and never had or seen or heard of a string loop sliding or moving at all.
