Guys who work for me tell me I have a "thing" with numbers because at my job I'm always asking for them. I have thousands of numbers available to me at my finger tips which help to keep the powerplant I work at operating safely and efficiently. These numbers play a very important part in the daily operation of heavy industrial machinery, and even more so when it comes to troubleshooting abnormal operating conditions or equipment failures.

So add my "thing with numbers" to a closed deer season and sprinkle in a touch of free time and boredom while at work and there you have it, the recipe for me to crunch the deer contest numbers for the sole purpose of looking busy while sitting at my desk.

We had 14 teams with 12 members on each which gives us a grand total of 168 participants.

Out of 168 hunters:
- 82 hunters or 48.8% came up empty and ate tag soup
- 86 hunters or 51.2% managed to submit at least one kill

Out of the 86 killers:
- 39 of them submitted multiple kills (any variation of BB,DD,BD etc...)
- 29 killed a single buck
- 18 killed a single doe

The highest number of members without a kill on a team was 9

The lowest number of members without a kill on a team was 4

The highest number of members with multiple kills on a team was 6

The lowest number of members with multiple kills on a team was 0

I know the contest is still going on but I don't think there will be enough new submissions to skew the data too much. Those who still have an open season should keep at it and know the rest of us are sitting jealously on the sidelines counting the days till our seasons open again!

Let me be the first to give a big shout out and say thank you to all the mods for once again giving up their free time to run a great contest. Awesome job guys!!

Also, congrats to each and everyone who participated in the event and thank you for sharing your experiences.

I'll take being 1 of 39! Next time you get really bored, take those 39 and see how they did in previous years or do the same for previous years and then if there's overlap in the submissions in each category. Do guys tend to kill consistently? Does tag number come into play etc.

A fly in your stats is that you're assuming the all hunters that "came up empty" also "ate tag soup". I'm aware of several hunters (including me) that didn't kill from a saddle so they couldn't submit to the contest but they filled the freezer none the less. Many of us may be saddle hunters, ground hunters, tree stand hunters or whatever is the best way to get a deer on the ground. That aside, I appreciate your efforts.....numbers are cool to dissect!

Those are cool stats! I need to actually start participating. I tell myself every year to try and never do and then I wind up killing 4 or 5 deer and usually a good buck and wind up kicking myself.

I can't believe no one has recruited me to one of these slacker teams!

Would only have to do 38 because I was one of them last year too, haha! That will take time because I'll have to create a few more spread sheets and scroll through the submission threads for each of the previous years but I just may do that... stay tuned...

I'll play around more when I go back to work later this week. I thought about adding more categories like kills by weapon type, time of kill, month of kill, kills by state, multiple state kills etc but most of that data isn't readily available or gleaned from the submission thread.

Not sure how many participated this year that did not last year as well. I know I was not in the contest in previous years but participated this year. So running numbers on years past might get tricky

These stats are a breakdown of the "saddle hunting" contest data only and therefore does not take into account kills outside of the stated contest rules, kills from the bucket brigade and timber gimp contests or from contact with motor vehicles.

Ditto, same story!

Thanks for this, I'm a stats nerd as well. Along with multiple other types of nerd. Reeeeally hoping I can tweak the stats ever so slightly still before January ends but we shall see...

First year in the contest. While I was going to be in the woods regardless, keeping it in the back of my mind did help me eek out a few more minutes in the saddle just to compete more.
