Random Musings From Your Resident Contrarian and Underage Curmudgeon

And one more H8T since it is raining for the 1000th day this year on a holiday that could be spent hunting if it was better westher. I hate bow hunters that hunt in the rain - self explanatory. Even for gun hunters is bad idea if you make a marginal shot.

ive killed a handful in the rain. Bow and gun. I’ve not lost a deer to a washed blood trail due to rain happening during a hunt. I have lost two blood trails I shot under Blue skies to pop up Unforecasted rain overnight. I’ve also lost deer I know I made a lethal hit, with no blood to be found, under blue skies.

that said, I use rain and wind and snow and any other weather advantage I can to get close to deer. But it’s near impossible to make a shot in a torrential downpour Or 60mph winds. Like everything, there’s limits to effectiveness.

I don’t shoot sharp broadheads or nasty boolets to get good blood trails. I shoot them to make deer die. Blood trails are not predictable.

I agree that given the choice I like clear skies. And sitting in the rain sucks sometimes. But it’s never stopped me from going in the woods.

That's another one for me.
I hate unforecasted rain (or snow) showers that pop up right after you shoot a deer! I haven't lost one yet but one of them was pretty darn close. I found the deer by finding blood on the bottom of the leaves on a bush.

I found one of the deer by dog. The other was lost. And if I’d had access to dog no doubt on finding her.

You know what I hate, the obsession with the word "ethics" in the hunting community. 90% of the time it feels more like a cheap trick to claim the moral high ground than any actual ethical thought.

It's a "God on our side" thing a lot of times for sure. Invoking a higher power as justification for selfish or trivial desires and opinions. An intellectual shortcut.

Just because you rub the lamp and bring out the ethics genie and I still disagree with you, doesn't mean I'm (gasp) unethical.

But, sometimes ethics is a good thing to think about and discuss.

DISCUSSION and CONSIDERATION of ethics is a very good thing for sure. Ethics isn't following some timeless, everchanging checklist (that's like 5-10 years old). It's an expression of respect for the deer, fellow hunters, those around you, the land you hunt on, and the priviledge to hunt it.

The worst things ever done by humans often share two features: they’re done with good intentions, and they’re typically done to things or people that the perpetrators deem “less than them.”

What fosters the environment for things Like that to happen? Bad ideas, poor communication, and mostly people thinking their ethical or moral underpinnings take precedence over anyone else’s.

I hate it with a fiery passion!

If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart? - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Let's give young hunters on a budget, or adult onset hunters looking to avoid wasting money a thread to help them cut out some nonsense.
I missed this. Here's my list of essentials for new hunters on a budget.

All you NEED to kill deer is a weapon and ammunition for it. Oh, and to LEGALLY kill them you need a license. As far as what you want...

  • The bow or gun really, truly doesn't matter. You won't be using it a lot starting out. DO pay the money and/or take the time to have it tuned or sighted in. It doesn't have to be new. I'd encourage you to borrow one from the mentor you hopefully have and treat it respectfully. You don't have to "buy once, cry once" either. That's what salesman and the people they have duped say. You do want to not buy junk. If you have $300, you can buy a new bow or gun that will kill deer as good as anything.
  • You want comfortable clothes for the conditions you'll be hunting in. You probably have them. Got a pair of tennis shoes and some old khakis? Got a jacket that's not neon pink or blue? Ok then. You've got clothes. Get in the truck and let's go. If you don't have that, your mentor probably has something he got too fat for that you can borrow.
  • You want a backpack. Again, it doesn't need to be camo. That old college bookbag? She'll do. Your buddy may have one if you don't
  • You want a a compass and a good light. Actually, you want two of each. Buddy may have a spare.
  • You want a pocket knife or a fixed blade that's light and has a 4 inch blade. Thereabouts. If it came from a gas station you're gonna have a bad time. Buck, victorinox, mora, shrade, and gerber all make ok knives for cheap. Your mentor has hundreds of these knives that friends and family have gifted him over the years, and that he's bough on a whim.
  • You don't need to be in a treestand unless your buddy has one you can borrow and he'll show you how to use it and you trust him not to be a retard. You do need a place to sit. A bucket or a lawnchair works fine. I am literally BEGGING you to not try and learn to hunt and safely climb a tree at the same time.
  • DO NOT BUY ACCESSORIES!!! You don't need hand warmers, grunt calls, butt-out tools, reflective tacks, special knives, or any other item that lives on the end caps and clip strips in your local sporting goods store. Chances are if you mention said items, your mentor will laugh and say he has one you can have, because he sure as heck doesn't need it.
Get a trend. You need a flesh and blood huntin' buddy/mentor. And you don't need a lot of gear.

For all you seasoned hunters out there. Adopt an adult-onset hunter or a young adult. They can drive you nuts but they can also make you a better hunter because they'll ask the questions you haven't though about in years.

This deserves either a video or its own thread. Useful info here.

“I tend to go against the grain on, or am in the minority on. If you've got similar feelings, but are afraid to speak up, lest the fanboy tribalism carry you to the stake for virtual burning, I'll be the martyr. Now that I've offered my neck, join me!”

Threads with the title such as “first kill from a saddle” are a bit....underwhelming.

Unless it is someone’s very first deer - ever - so what? A saddle is a tool. It is the device assisting in holding you into the air for an improved chance to harvest your chosen quarry.....

Yes, this is saddle hunter.com.....and that can be exciting, to some....but where does it start and end?

Would threads such as these appear on this site with such regularity?
“First kill...
- From the ground?
- Using x brand climbing sticks?
- Wearing y brand saddle?
- Wearing merino baselayers?
- Wearing rubber boots?
- Holding my lucky rabbits foot?
- Wearing fruit of the loom?
- Freeballing?

Freeballing? Why yes, I think I shall.

To me first buck from a saddle means that you have learned to use that tool to become successful so I celebrate it. Enough negativity in this world without adding to it.

If it was an archery deer from saddle yes...gun or arrow gun..I mean sissy bow...I mean crossbow...meh I can shoot those off handed while dangling from my feet

I hate how hostile some saddle hunters (not really here) on social media groups get if someone says anything negative against saddle hunting. It's okay for someone to have a different opinion. People find out that they'd rather use a hang on, climber, etc. I'd probably opt for sitting on the ground most of the time if the spot warrants it. I bought into the hype. I don't think saddle hunting is the end all be all method, people just find it to be more effective for their style of hunting.

Whew, where to start.

I loath the product pimps on hunting shows. I don’t have cable/satellite, but my in-laws do and my FIL turns on the hunting shows when we’re over there because we both hunt and talk about it a lot. Not sure what was on the other night but it annoyed me to no end. Couldn’t just go “get in the blind”, but had to “go get in the muddy blind” with obligatory camera shots on all the sponsor products.

Then hearing the dude and kids saying he “put a rage in the cage”. JFC it’s enough to make me vomit.

Also loath people on social media posting up their kill pimp pics with all their gear draped across the deer with caption saying “had to let the (insert weapon of choice) eat today”. Seriously man?

I’m new here and don’t like my 2nd post being “things that annoy me”, but hey, when in Rome.

This has been a fun thread to read. And I’m guessing that I’m not the only curmudgeon here under 40 and way ahead of his time. :tearsofjoy:

I hate that every single pair of hunting pants bibs unders all of it don’t zip off completely. How does the hunting industry not understand the concept of not wanting to take off muddy boots.

I hate devoting time to hunting an area less aggressively waiting for best time of year to press, only to completely let it slip past me the place would be crawling with duck hunters. Deer dynamics completely changed.

I hate how much I like deer hunting with the hickory creek over my compound.
