I use a ratchet for my two pioneer ROS or some DIY ROS that I use. Never have used OCB buckles or straps. Will OCB get ROS tight enough around the tree? Your good help appreciated.

Yes OCB will get them about as tight as a ratchet strap. I’ll use the ratchet strap on any of my preset ROS (only because I have limited OCBs) but if I’m going in to hang n hunt especially in the morning I prefer the OCB. Quieter and easier to set for me and just as tight.

@Nutterbuster has a video on how to get em really tight.

problem i have with the OCB is that my steps almost always seem to fold over away from the tree even though the strap is as tight as i can possibly get it....i went back to the ratchet for now.

The hook style 1s are aggravating to me...I use the sewn version....my technique to get it set right is to thread the strap and take out the slack and then work the handle kinda like a ratchet strap while pulling the tail end to work out the slack that u aren't able to pull out with just arm strength....if u think u are exerting to much force to cam the buckle back off and give it a little more slack. U don't need to strain to cam the buckle...it'll break ....the key is slowly working the slack out and tighten in small intervals. Will be just as solid a connection as a ratchet strap.

I’ve used squirrel steps on an OCB pretty much exclusively as a platform for 3 seasons now.

The key to me is to have less force on the steps for the 99% of the time your feet are on them. This = JX3 hybrid.

When I do stand on them, they don’t budge though.

Ratchet strap will work better. But it comes at a weight bulk and noise penalty. An OCB works great, for most people, most of the time.

It’s like 10 bucks to try both out. Do that.

Sweet..Have to get some OCBs and try it. Thanks everyone!

The ocbs are both awesome and terrible. They either work awesome or the dang hook pops off when you're just about to tighten it and the hook and your steps find every metal thing they can to bounce off of and make noise. And you have to reset the whole thing around the tree again.

I still use it but have been frustrated by the hooks and debating straps because I still mess this up after a bunch of practice.

The sewn buckle fixes the hook problem. I have both the hook and sewn, and the sewn is easier. It stays in place better while adjusting your step placement too. The only problem is sometimes I put them on before I have had my coffee, and you can string them wrong.

EWO out of stock of sewn ones. Ordered some with separate bucks. See what works for me.
