Guys - so after some successful attempts repelling in the yard, the only grey area is retreiving my rope. All the research I've done just says to tie paracord to it, so maybe Im overthinking it.

I guess my main points of interest are:
- Where on the rope do you tie to to efficiently pull it down?
- What if you have a limb in the way coming down?

What am I missing

I use parachord with a carabiner on both ends to raise/lower my bow and pull down rope. Attach parachord with carabiner here to pull down rope.

Obviously after I unwrap gear tie that holds tether/rappel rope tight around tree.

What I do is have a caribeaner with paracord tied to it. I attached the caribeaner to the loop on the end of my rappel rope that’s against the tree. Once I’m down I just pull the paracord. Takes a little effort because the rappel rope was under load but seems to work for me. Branches in the way shouldn’t be an issue really. When you connect the paracord caribeaner you throw it down to the ground.

Use a solid carabiner, not a small plastic one, tie paracord to said carabiner. I use a figure 8 on a bite girth hitched, I attach paracord carabiner to the loop, and once you get to the bottom, take 2 or three steps away and pull.

Are y’all attaching to your loop that the tag end goes through? I ask bc I was doing this and changed bc I found it much easier to pull the longer tag end up through the carabiner than pulling the whole rope up and down bc there’s more friction that way. Much easier to pull the rope through the smooth carabiner.

I think I know what you’re describing but might have to see it to be sure what you mean.

I clip to my petzl triangle with a clip on a retractable dog leash and it comes right down.

I use the dog leash to pull up my bow, but use the tag end of my rappel line to let it down.

I found thee best place to hook your pull down rope is behind the knot you made to make the loop to girth hitch the rappel line around the tree. This way it pulls the loop down from the running line which also gets that same knot away from the tree and prevents it from getting trapped in crotches.

Post #2 in this thread is a pic of where I attach

Also I want to clarify, I know some of you may have noticed the screw gate not closed. That is absolutely wrong, I was navigating through branches on the way up and when I reached height I took that pic and noticed it then immediately fixed. In addition I now use a mallion delta from dano for my rappel rope!

This is exactly where I install mine. Works like a charm. Attach a small piece of paracord in between your figure 8 knot and your barrel knot. This will be your permanent attachment point for your choice of pull-down rope. Does precisely what @slonstdy described.2020-06-14 19.54.48.jpg

Great food for thought here guys, really appreciate the input. I'll follow up when i get another chance to play in the yard

So you're girth hitching your rope to the tree, then clipping the carabiner in the "girth loop", then pulling that strait down - correct?

Ahh I see what you're saying, you tie your "pull down" line where you drew that yellow circle on post #2, then your carabiner acts like a pulley and the long end of the rope passes up and through, then falls out of the tree - right?

So the barrel knot is there only to designate a place to tie your "pull down line", and you put it there for the same reason @slonstdy described, to pull knot away from tree to avoid snags

That’s why I switched man, happened once and that was enough lol

You have not had trouble attaching to that side? Attaching to that side makes the carabiner go back over the limb? I did that once and my delta link got stuck in the limb v. I attach to the rope on the side my delta link is tied too and the delta link comes down first. Also I do not used a looped girth hitch to attach to the delta link. I use a Scaffold Knot.

Yes sir, smooth and easy.

Haven’t had an issue like that yet but something I’ll look out for now. Once the long end falls completely through the delta I just give the bottom of my rappel rope a shake and it’s always fallen right down
