I’m trying to buy rope for my climbing sticks that I’ve made. I almost picked up some winch rope at Harbor Freight. But I wasn’t sure I could splice it. Also what the best size rope? 1/4?

Some people on here will say not to use the harbor frieght stuff but it is the same dyneema rope with possible quality control issues. Sampson is the safest bet. 1/4 inch is plenty. A lot of people use 7/64.

It depends on the height of your versabutton you've made and how you plan to tie the rope. I use 1/8" amsteel. It is pretty cheap. I wouldn't buy anything for life support from Harbor Freight.

I used HF dyneema for rope mods and it worked great. You can splice it easily using a dowel to open the strands for the Brummel lock, and then some light guage wire to do about a 10" bury. I wouldn't use the cheap stuff on critical stuff like linemans' rope, Bridge, Tether, but for steps, you should be safe since you're always attached to the tree with your safety ropes.

About how long over all did you cut your rope?

If you're just putting a loop on one end, then add about 1 foot to the overall desired length. For my 7' ropes I cut them 8'.
Same here I thought 8 was a little long as a finished length so I went for 7.5’. Try to get a 6-8” burry. That’s what Amsteel manufactures recommend.

@Prog27 cool video actually. I'm curious since your strap button is pretty much centered, do yo have any problem with these shorter sticks kicking out or not locking onto the tree well?

Thanks glad you liked it. Not gonna win any awards but it’s cool to share....
That was my biggest concern when I did it. I have not had any kicking out yet at all. I think that aider really helps to stay centered when climbing. I have climbed really smooth bark trees like a pin oak in my back yard, which is a tree that historically will allow the kick out to happen and it was fine. The Helium’s really bite the tree well. Often times when removing the sticks when climbing down, when I remove the rope the stick stays dug into the tree freely hanging. For the price of them I just find it hard to beat. Very easy to cut with a hack saw and drill right through with a hand drill. About $4 in hardware for DIY Versa button. And found the Amsteel on Amazon for $17.99 Ucreative 3/16" x 50' 7000LBs... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07LD594M6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I was done in about an hour.
