Ropeman Safety

You dont need to use a prusik hitch, theres infinite better friction hitches out there that can be used in its place.

That is why I switched to a distel and shizll

As a newbie, who just made a saddle purchase yesterday and before hunting with it I would like to practice with my exact set-up throughout the spring and summer, this is a great thread. I really like the idea of the ropeman one, (wife gave me one for Christmas), but often wondered if anyone used a backup with them. I was initially thinking of just using it with the linesman belt, but seeing suggestions of backups with tether has me thinking I need another. I know you have to trust your equipment, but for me a backup on the linesmen and tether would put me at ease, not enough to get lazy, just feel more confident. I was wondering what would be a good length of rope for the backup, if I decide to go with a distel or shizll?

When I started I bought and used a 28 inch eye to eye 8mm armor prus cord from treestuff.com on my tether because I wasn't comfortable with the ropeman 1. I eventually moved over to the ropeman 1 primarily because the armor prus cord is a bit too long. As the season has progressed I am on the verge of changing back to a shorter armor prus eye to eye cord and pairing it with the shizzl for easier adjustment. I have used the ropeman 1 on lineman's belt from the beginning and really like it.

End of my tether has figure 8 on a bite and hooked to my rch(rock climbing harness). I'm backing up my saddle and Ropeman. I've also used my lineman as a second tether at waist level on a few occasions where I had an iffy feeling. Theres a post on it today. If I was gonna bother with a prusik above the Ropeman, I'd just ditch the Ropeman. Seems the prusik would just get in the way.

The prusik doesn't get in the way at all. You don't even know it's there. I left the blakes hitch on my Kestrel tether when I added a ropeman. The ropeman acted like a tender and pushed the hitch up the rope and it was really easy to grab the hitch and ropeman with one hand and slde them back down together. I don't use it any more because I hunt with a fleece saddle and rch so I back up the ropeman by connecting the tail to my RCH like you but, when I was backing up a ropeman with a Blake's hitch it took zero extra effort to do it.

Good stuff to pay attention to about the Ropeman when using,I really injoyed this read. Not to take away from the Ropeman but has any of you had any good or bad experience using a Madrock safeguard Dscender on your Tether Line?

I will be receiving mine in the next couple days (Tethrd Mantis), I will be practicing and climbing and making sure I'm good-to-go for Oct 1, 2019. The good thing about Stoicism is negative visualization - think of worst case scenario and prepare for that.. after that I should be safe. fingers crossed.

Read the whole tread, and understand safety is the utmost consideration. Going to use the ropeman 1 w/ a distel above on tether. HUNT ON!!!

Now I'm looking forward to reading the the safety thread about converting the ground sit-drag into a saddle used 20ft off the ground. Anyone got that link? ;)

We’ve had that thread. It’s called a rock climbing harness. Then it’s as safe as anything else. There are people that don’t back them up.

Mike Nutto,
You are right on track. Ropeman 1 and back up knot. I seldom have both tether and lineman's belt connected to tree.
I'm over 60 and killed lots of game.
Rode a climbing stand to the ground 40 years ago. Still have forearm scares.
I like this saddle idea. Shot a cow elk five pigs and a doe last, my first year.
Safe is number one. Live to hunt again. I use my saddle when in other types of stands also. The safety rope to the ground in those application s cuts out a lineman's rope. Grigri ride down is a thrill.
Thank you Thethrd Nation for turning me on.

Should have read seldom don't have both connected to tree. Sorry

Yea, I think back to when my dad and I used to build treestands when I was a kid and it seems a miracle we never fell. Then we used actual seatbelts from old cars for a while too lol.
Think about the old "safety harness'" that were nothing more than a strap around your chest. If the fall didnt get you then the suffocation from the "harness" would, lol.

This will be my last interruption of this thread :)

“Ma flesche (asseure toy) n’espargnera personne
Vous danserez trestout ce balet, que je sonnne

My arrow (I promise you) spares no one
You will all dance the ballet of which I sing”

That, and memento mori form the backbone of my outlook on life. Gotta love the Stoics.

Who's to say the Ropeman is the weakest link? There are so many knots, straps, pieces of equipment that we are trusting our life with. I'm not saying that having a backup isn't smart. I have stopper knots at the end of my ropes for that reason. All I'm saying is that at some point each person has to accept the inherent risk of climbing into a tree.

On a totally unrelated topic I'm thinking of adding a trampoline or a bed of feathers to my pack so in case my gear fails I don't hit the ground. Thoughts?... :tonguewink:

I have a prusik at the end of my tether that I clip into the biner that goes through the RM. Redundancy is the name of the game
