Saddle Build Video

Bad news...
these (attached) are what I received in the mailbox today.
4 belts (one I would use at work for trousers and the other 3 for saddle) one of which does not hold up under load nor if you press on a single lever while the other 3 yes ... probably one is defective and the I could use to hold my pants up.
They do not show any writing concerning the load (as in the sale advertisement).

I sent that junk back ...
now I'm trying to contact a local shop that handles original AustriAlpin buckles to find out how much money I will spend ...
stay tuned... :tonguewink:

Great!
I found an AustriAlpin importer ...
I ordered :
1 piece FX45KVD for the waist belt.
2 pieces FY25KVV for the thigh straps.
I spent about € 70.00 shipped.
Now you just have to wait for them to arrive ...
according to the supplier they should not take more than 5 days.

I can not wait...
in the meaning time I continue to recover what I miss ....

Amsteel for the bridge and the prusik knot, a pair of carabiners,
a good rope for the tether, a 1 inch webbing ...
after finding everything assemble the saddle and start construction
of the steps to climb trees like that Jim Stepp of WEI ...

Best Regards...

Well ... at least the buckles have arrived!
Now all that remains is to wait for the Gutterman Tera 40 thread, and the 1-inch webbing.

Next I will have to find the Amsteel....

Not sure if you have stores that cater to 4x4 or off road, but most non metal winch cables are amsteel like.

This morning, I quickly put the new sewing machine to the test ...
I sewed the beauty of 5 layers of webbing with Gutterman Tera 40 and a 90 round tip needle without any problem.o_O
The webbing in question is 1.45mm (~ 1/16 inch) thick.

I was impressed! :openmouth:

Next week if all goes well I put my hand on the saddle!

At the moment I'm too busy!

@always89y Great thread and videos! I'm for sure going to be following this for my next saddle build! I was hoping you could explain how you made the bridge setup in post #28 specifically two aspects of it. First what were the finished continuous amsteel loop sizes for both sides and second how did you do what looks to be a double Prussic to allow hip loop adjustment and bridge length adjustment?

Well I finally got my mesh in after it was on back order for 3 weeks and I have time off work so I'm trying my hand at @always89y pleated mesh saddle. My sewing isn't as clean and I should have ironed it flat before ironing in the pleat but so far its going well.20200802_202415.jpg20200802_202436.jpg

Well not sure what happened but it appears I lost some height and width during sewing. I know at least some of it had to do with not ironing the folds/waves out of the mesh before starting. Not the prettiest and ran into issues with using tubular webbing for all straps wich the singer 4452 couldn't handle with all the overlaps particularly on the leg webbing section... hence why there's no stitching on the top layer but the bottom is secured. Things I'll change on the next one would be to start with a wider pattern to account for any potential loss and I took measurements center to center from waistline instead of widest part of hip so its a bit narrow... Ill test hip pinch after this storm passes. Id also use flat webbing instead of tubular for leg straps as it probably doesn't need to be load bearing and 1000lbs webbing would suffice. Still need to make my amsteel bridge but other than that... this was a fun build. Thanks @always89y for the inspiration.20200803_180243.jpg20200803_180309.jpg20200803_180330.jpg

Looks great. I ran into the same issue with my first attempt using tubular webbing for the leg straps. Nice and strong but not necessarily needed. I just had a couple friends recieve their phantom and it appears to use flat webbing for the leg straps.
Anyways, good job and show us the next One when done please.

Got my first short hang in the new saddle today since it finally stopped raining. Surprisingly there's not much hip pinch for it being narrow on the waist. The pleat seems to work well though because the height of the saddle shrank a bit on me while sewing, I don't think it fully expands but its comfortable. Really liking the triad/utilibridge setup similar to what @always89y shows in post #28. Only fail I had today was on my diy sys hauler I have some super thin ripstop on the top and my first "prototype" had some zigzag stitching pull out because it was right on the edge of the seam. Should be an easy fix. My 2nd "prototype" however held up fine so from now on ill be doing the top hem like I did on that one.20200807_161545.jpg

That thing looks awesome!

Thanks @always89y it was a fun project to follow your video. Going to order some more buckles and webbing and have another go at it with non tubular webbing and increase the measurements a bit. I may also try one in the camo Cordura. Also thought about incorporating some of this saddles design features into another @ckossuth kestrel clone lol then Ill have to decide which saddle to bring each time I hunt.

Made another one and it fits way better. Got my first hang in it today as well. Super comfortable and the pleat idea is pretty slick. Still haven't decided if I like the amsteel bridge but I do like the adjustability of where its pulling on the harness with the prussiks on the bridge loops.20200817_170222-01.jpegIMG_20200817_184800_441.jpgIMG_20200817_184800_420.jpg

Are you finding this pleated version to accommodate the less callipygian better than your first pleated version? Or, would you still go no pleats, even with the stiffer black mesh?
