Saddle Sit Scouts

Take your map and a something to jot notes on and start with the areas that you have targeted with your online scouting. Presumably those will be spots geared toward pre-rut and rut time periods. As you are moving from spot to spot pay attention to mast producing trees of all kinds and make notes, make notes on heavy use trails, make notes if it appears trails and mast trees are correlated, make notes on topo feature and vegetation features that create pinches or edges and how they relate to food and travel. Look for current food sources and travel also. When you get home plot it all out on a map. The map will show you some key spots to focus on for go back trips to hang and observe. Remember that the avg deer has a home range of a square mile or less, figure out the spots between the spots and you may find some fantastic hunting without other folks finding your spots.

One winter i was pheasant hunting with my dog and she ended up with a ton of ticks. It was cold then too. I think the get into big nest in the winter and if you get one youll get them all.
 
WARNING: Last March I was checking out a thicket, saw a highway of tracks and 3 deer, went back during bow season and did not see the deer sign. That was because the water was up in March and it ran them into those thickets, water went down they went back home, I didnt answer the question : why are these deer here.
 
I use mine and hunt hogs with.. all while still scouting for potential spots to hang for deer hunting.

If ur new to all this then I would definitely take all your saddle stuff....climb trees u would possibly think about hunting from....learn how much tree lean your comfortable with, how easily or how difficult branches make your climb, etc.....the more trees u climb before season the better.....that's 1 of the main advantages to the saddle IMO....being able to get into trees that climbers and lock on stands cant.
U will be more confident when hunting time rolls around....find the fresh sign and set up on that. Scouting this time of year teaches me good terrain info I can use later...I'm not looking for deer sign so much...looking more for funnels and travel corridors
