After talking with the game warden for this region, he advised me that I'm never going "pig hunting" since pigs are considered invasive and an "incidental take" animal. He told me that I should always remember I'm small game hunting and if I happen upon pigs, I should kill them all.

After that conversation, I read in the rules that if you're bobcat or fox hunting during small game season, you can use centerfire rifles.

So this begs a question. If I go out looking for bobcats with my .300 blackout and I happen upon a sounder of pigs, I should be legal, right?

Seems logical to me, seems odd to me pigs are left out of the rules like that.

There is no closed season for pigs. Kill them year round with any legal weapon.for the season you're in.

On private land you can bait them and shoot them at night.

The only real regulation is that on public lands you can't hunt them at night. Which kinda makes sense because you don't want Bubba out there running around all over the woods at 2 in the morning shooting everything up.

Anybody have any luck putting down hogs with .22LR? Not having much luck tracking down a .22 Mag, I normally use my 30-06 and put them down where they stand. The alternative would be bring my bow but stalking with bow in the swamp doesn't sound realistic.

Do you own a muzzleloader? Your allowed to use one if so

@g2outdoors I don’t have the refs here with me but most wma’s don’t have furbearer seasons. Your pretty much stuck with rim fire, black powder, or archery gear.

So on the archery gear are you limited to small game heads? I do normally squirrel hunt with 100gr slick tricks. Don’t like a long blood trail on my tree rats!!!

I have a call into the game warden for the area. As soon as I hear back, I'll post all the answers.

Muzzleloader, very effective pig thumper and I'm almost certain you can use them during small game.

I used to live on Fort Benning. I only hunt Archery. I learned from a friend who would hunt them with a recurve. I use a compound. I love spot and stalk, and you have to walk and walk and walk to find them. A lot of people will set up over fresh sign and wait for them to come back. Normally they won't, unless the food is still there. They will rotate through a range that they work and in this way don't eat all the food in one area. At benning, it was about a week rotation till they got back to the same area. Based off food and competition, they will modify where they move. This was my experience in Fort Benning, East side of Georgia might be different. Also, types of broadhead don't matter by the regulation for hunting them. Really hard to use a small game head and expect to kill a pig. I use fixed 100grn to ensure that I get full penetration.

Well looks like I'm not gonna make it this year. My 95 year old grandfather is close to the end of one hell of a run. One day he is good, the next not so much. I don't want to hold a spot and not be able to go. I'll have to live this one thru y'all.

Sorry you will not be attending. Good luck with your Grandfather. I hope that if he does pass, the transition is easy on you and the family,

To anyone that is out of state Active Duty. You can get a resident license in GA. I just checked with the DNR folks. All you have to do is have your military ID Card to purchase as a resident.

So is anyone starting to research where to hunt when they get to SaddlePalooza? I contacted the DNR and they had one of their officers call me for that area. Unfortunately, he doesn't pig hunt. He told me about Buffalo Swamp as a good place to go, unless you have a boat, it is a 44 mile drive to get to. I was thinking about taking my canoe, but the river might be high and hard to cross. Anyone know the area that is willing to point out some good areas to focus on?

@ecotanker all the wma’s in that coastal river system have good populations of pigs. A lot is going to depend on the river level when the time comes.

@EricS thanks. I was checking out the terrain relief for the area and see that there isn't much change in elevation. I am assuming that the river will be high during Saddlepalooza. I have some experience doing spot and stalk for pigs when I was at Fort Benning GA, not sure if the same techniques apply on this side of the state. I will be bowhunting, so I gotta get close. Plan on doing a lot of walking with the wind in my face.

I was thinking about bringing my boat, but don't know the regs on out of state boat registration. I guess I should call the DNR.
