Schwabisch hitch on Oplux/Resc tech

You can go up with the 8 too

This method is a bit risky. It is quite difficult to control the descent rate and in an event that you get twisted up you could unhook the rope from the figure 8. It also wants to open up really quickly which creates a very jerky descent. This rope configuration using the figure 8 is how one of our members here fell and got banged up. I've used it and being able to stop is nice, but it it isn't worth the risks to me. I also noticed that if you don't feed it properly it likes to jump over itself which can create a small drop too.

Totally understand and appreciate that. I am being careful with it. Testing out with a distel above it as back up. As long as I can remember to let go and not grab…should keep me safe?

If you are already using a hitch then why would you need to run the figure 8 in this fashion? The hitch will hold your position as needed in a standard figure 8 config. and will provide a smoother rappel with out any additional risky business.
