Schwabisch hitch on Oplux/Resc tech

The ol' carabiner wrap didn’t look too safe at first glance but I might try it just for fun? (if I can remember)

The reason I asked about the 8s is because some of them look gigantic in the users hand. I'd like to stay compact as possible.

I bought a couple of small compact 8s thinking like you, but the BD super 8 is worth the size for how well it feeds and is versatile for several rope sizes. YMMV.

I have been playing around with this hitch I saw in another thread. It seems to be working well. I added another wrap to it. I can operate it one handed without a tender in both directions. Using oplux and trc

I wanted to try different hitches because my distel slipped when the Oplux was wet and I wasn’t able to add another wrap.

I’m thinking Climbing with just the Schwabisch hitch. It tends so fluidly that I’m not sure the safeguard is the best option anymore.
I went with the Safeguard originally, 1 for the hype and 2 for the simplicity of having one metal device to carry. Both for ascending and rappelling.
Now after watching Fat Cow I might be convinced that the only extra metal object I need is a figure 8, especially with the soft lock video. Up with the friction hitch. Down with the 8
I was comfortable rappelling on just a Munter hitch, but it was really introducing a twist in my rope.

You can go up with the 8 too

Assuming the air clears up a little today, I may have to try this. I still climb on my Duck but this looks interesting for rappelling.

Rappelling on the 8 side loaded worked great. It locked in tight, rappelled smoothly and similar operation to a Madrock. Since I'm right handed, I rigged it so that the tail is pointed left. That way, my strong hand is controlling the standing end. Even got my son up in the tree.

As to the OP's original comment about rope diameter, mine is that way too. It appears that the sheath is somewhat loose or slippery on the core but once loaded, everything tightens up.

Just tested the sideloaded 8 with my C-IV. Being a stiffer rope and slightly larger diameter, it felt like it rappelled smoother and locked up better. I climbed my Resc Tech immediately afterwards and there was an ever so slight slippage when first bighting down but you had to watch the rope to see it. Putting a 1/2 hitch on the neck is simple insurance and unties easily.

I tried climbing with his method and while doable, I'll stick to my Duck.

It's a new week which means it's time to switch everything again.

Swapping out the Resc Tech for the C-IV. The Resc Tech is great rope and actually stronger than the C-IV but the C-IV is more forgiving on the climb with a slight advantage with the x-loaded 8 rappel. Rope also moved from the saddle pouch to the backpack but the pouch will stay to store the rope once at height.

Madrock is now on my growing ring of misc. hardware and primarily will be used when my son wants to climb.

Nice! Glad you liked it. I’m not SRT’ing but I do like the 8 rigged for Auto Stop for descending. Still working out my details but definitely going this route. I’m actually about to move from C-IV to Oplux…based on your experience I may be moving back to C-IV…

There's actually nothing wrong with the Resc Tech on the rappel or at height. It's actually about 2k# stronger, lighter and packs better than the C-IV. The reason I'm switching back is on the climb. Since I SRT with a Duck, the Resc Tech had a random tendency to roll to the side of the Duck's jaw and slip a little. I found a way to overcome this but it's not ideal. The C-IV, being a slightly stiffer rope of larger diameter, doesn't have this issue.

If I were only rappelling, I'd stick with the Resc Tech without question.

This is a good thread y'all got going. I was trying out my new saddle last night and while using my resc tech and the RP2 (I meant Ropeman 2) I found I didn't love how it jumped a couple time and pulled the sheath on my rope causing a couple little tears.

I was already ordering one 6mm eye to eye from EWO and a mini 8 to try rappelling with in conjunction with my ATC but after last night I added two more of each this morning so I can basically do away with all my mechanical devices.

Hopefully a schwabisch is the going to tend nicely for me.

Lol if you don't know you can't afford it.

I meant RM2. Aka Ropeman 2
