Scouting/shed hunting

No sheds but they are starting to drop em

I'm sure they are.

The issue here is that they're under 2 ft of snow, along with most all sign other than what the deer did this morning, or maybe where they messed with a tree.

For sure there are plenty of enjoyable reasons to be in tbe woods right now...but aheds and scouting aren't at the top of the list.

I was told recently by a biologist that the timing of shed antlers is affected by a deer’s nutrition or lack there of. This fall in the North GA mountains we had almost a total mast failure and the deer in the mountains are in poor shape. As a result many started dropping in January which is very early for around here. I asked him why so many sheds are found in food plots and he said that when a deer feeds in the rain it will shake the water off just like a dog will do when wet. The force created will just snap the antlers off at the bases.

That's some good info. Makes sense but I had never put that together. We had a low yield of mast crop here in northern Michigan this year as well. Maybe I will find some sheds outside of the winter yards this year.

I had a good day in Ohio today.

Ive never actually been shed hunting. Though quite a few times ill be readying a stand location for the next season and ill find sheds. This year i plan to shed hunt several locations. Mostly public, but a few private as well

I've found three thus far but all were last years sheds. Still looking for the first fresh one of the year

1 shed so far just got dumped on with 10inches of snow. It’ll be awhile before I get back out. Just been checking food sources a lot still holding here in Wisconsin. My best places to find sheds is bedding right off food sources. I’m not talking daytime bedding but places they lay down while feeding at night. Grassy areas right off food sources I find the most. Follow tracks in snow to where the lay down near food. Whats the first thing they do when the get up they shake off. Went back Friday to look for the other side and thought I had found it until I got back to truck and discovered it was the same side as the previous days find.

Looks like a tornado went through just north of where these two sheds were found. I tried walking through it in about 10 different spots and just turned around, I couldn't get through it.
