Seat belt webbing and thread type/size?

So I went back and looked at my needles. They are the groz beckert. I haven't ordered any in a year and assumed I was using schmetz. I use those on my serger.

So I’m not the only one on here with a serger? Lol

I did buy the schmetz needles in various sizes in 135x17
Then I made a second trip to grab additional stuff from seller
He had groz beckert needles (about 8 packs of 10) in size 23.

I have heard that both are good.

Only experience with the schmetz needles and sgt knots v69 bonded nylon on some straps. Seems OK to me.

I ordered the thread 2 days ago and received it yesterday.
One day turnaround, that’s impressive.

Now I wait until the sailrite order comes in with the 2” polyester seat belt webbing.

I order most of my webbing from countrybrook design. Don’t know if you checked them out or not.

Serger, now I am jealous. I don’t know why I would need one, but I want one.

What do you use a serger for? Work with knits?

I will have to take a look at that site. Thanks for the info.

I really don’t use it much but it’s good for knits and good for keeping edges from fraying.

Not to highjack this thread... But what sergers are you guys running? I'm thinking about picking one up soon

This.... And I use it on a lot of seams when I'm sewing clothing (mainly vests and hoodies).

I placed an order for Amann serabond 135, 90 and 70from Wawak.com

Comparison for 135 thread, Wawak is definitely cheaper per yard.

Thread exchange $12.89 / 750 yards | 0.0172 / yard
Wawak $18.50 / 3,000 yards | 0.0062 / yard

I ordered some 2” polyester seat belt webbing too.

Once I get them and try the thread on the webbing, I’ll share more info.

I finally had time to dial in the Amann serabond (bonded polyester) thread in T70, T90 and T135 on my consew 206RB4 on 2 layers of 2” seatbelt webbing.

I like the thread. Look and feel is high quality. Good strength ratings. Feeds great through the consew. I did not need a second tensioner. I was surprised at how much of a range in upper tension I could use with the stitches still turning out nice. The thread has great reviews and wawak.com has great prices and cheap shipping.

I really am surprised that I am not hearing much “chatter” in saddle hunter DIY arena on Amann thread.

Serabond is offered in other sizes, e.g., 45, 105, 150, …
I called the USA source about acquiring the above sizes. Unfortunately, they are not popular sizes in the USA, so they are not provided in the USA.

For now, the Amann serabond bonded poly in 70, 90 and 135 along with gutermann for smaller sizes and I think I will be set for all my DIY outdoors projects.

You did not need a second tensioner even with the 135? That would be nice.
Did you need it with other thread of same size on that machine?
I wonder what the difference is that makes that possible? And I wonder if that would work on my mercury?

Even with the 135, no second tensioner needed. I really did have to crank down the tension. Maybe a stronger tension spring would work better. Or maybe even a dual tensioner. I have spent $$ on this acquisition and replacing parts, and a servo and thread, I am reluctant to spend any more until I get some more time on the machine.

I have some cheap dynamometers and I took some measurements

Bobbin tension 30g
Upper tension 1,200 to 1,300 grams
Amman serabond 135
Schmetz 135x17 size 22 needle
2” seat belt webbing from sailrite.

Also, 70 and 90 thread worked for me with only one tensioner.

I did have issue trying to use sgt knots bonded nylon 70 thread. I could not get the tension high enough to lay down a good stitch. I attribute that to the “quality” of the sgt knots thread. I did not try any other 135 thread on this machine.

Lastly, a pic of some of the “dynamometers” I use to measure tension. They are not precise, but I hope good enough to get me in the ballpark when changing thread.

If you don't mind a suggestion, and if you don't already have it, upgrade your tension plate to a 2 tension knobs plate. I got the suggestion from Jamie and have not looked back. Makes things so much smoother with 138 thread. Here's one I found that should be an exact fit for your machine.

I'm way behind in weighing in, but this is the approach I use as well. I set the lower RH tension disk set for sewing with 69 or similar thread, and don't run through the upper LH set of disks for that thread size. When I need to use a larger thread, like 138, I run through both tension disks. This, and dedicated bobbin cases for a given thread size/type makes it sooooo much faster to swap between thread sizes, and makes getting proper top tension on larger thread easier.

Are you using that tensioner on a single needle machine? This is sounding more interesting. But almost $50, I might hold off a little on trying this one.

I do have different bobbin cases for 70, 90 and 135.

I want to minimize the setup changes needed when going to/from different thread sizes.

yep, single needle. Same as @JCLINE84 and @always89y
