Secret tethrd stick used while one sticking

What I found is that when I reduce the fiddle factor, there are other safety concerns that pop up. I haven't found a great way to eliminate both but am always open to suggestions to improve.

Just saw this. Better to fiddle than to fall so my recommendation will always be to do what puts you at or above the safety factor that you deem comfortable.

ETA: I don’t one stick like you so it’s really not fair to compare. You’re using a 3 step aider and a step and I’m using a 1 step aider and a step. I’ve thought about a 2 step aider, but the only noise I make right now involves the aider and my foot into the tree so I’m willing to accept needing one extra stick move instead of the added noise.

Everyone has their own little idiosyncrasies and things that wig them out. For instance a safeguard wigs me out. There’s too much that can happen in my mind that would pull on the lever or make me pull the lever too far and away I go. I use an ATC and an autoblock and have myself convinced that only I can make me start descending and that’s the way I like it.

At the same time that the safeguard is freaking me out, I don’t use a LB unless there’s limbs involved. Counterintuitive from a safety standpoint, but like I say, we each have our own little hang ups. You use a LB and that’s cool, but watching you squat down a few feet below your LB to retrieve your tether is another move that freaks me out and is situation I would never let myself get into.

I'd like to see more on that aider - I saw in the youtube comments about it being 1' webbing with weep hose. I'm working out one-sticking and the aider has been my most consistent need for improvement - I'm using a spare versa-lite strap knotted onto my bottom steps so it spreads, but I only have 1 step and want more reach.

I noticed you rappel with just the safe guard - you don't need an autoblock or anything else? I ordered a safe guard this morning after seeing this, because my previous plan (ATC plus autoblock) required more adjustment (slackening the tether to attach the ATC, risk of dropping it, etc) to my tether/rappel line than I was really happy with, also more room for whoops, if it didn't grab tight enough to stop me hands-free to remove my stick on the way down. Thanks for the very clear demo on it.

If you were to slip on loose bark, have a disastrous sneeze, whatever... and drop anything (including your stick), have you got a solution for retrieving it from height? I would think changing out the end of the doyles hoist for some kind of grapple hook would let you climb without your bow hooked, have the freedom to pick up anything else you might drop, then fish your bow up with it at height, and still use it like you do as a retrieval on the way down. Just a thought.

Really nice job.
If you carry a platform or ring of steps you can use that as a backup if you drop your stick or carry 1 strap on step to allow you something to step on to rappel back down.

Aider pics.

Not too many challenges on a straight tree like that one. Now, if I would've filmed on a more gnarly tree there might have been some more fiddle to film for sure. Much of what I cut out was me talking to Sam with camera instructions, or stopping to talk about things that didn't add much value in the end for what was already a long video. I'll probably film another with 3 sticks and aiders. Can probably film that one in a straight 10 minute take with no cutaways.

I would like to see the three sticks and aiders. One sticking does not really appeal to me.

I don’t use my rappel line as my tether. It’s Oplux and folds up into the size of a softball and weighs nothing so I just stow it and use my regular tether.

My rappel line is only 26’ long just because that’s what I had left over and my retractable line is only 18’. Rather than dealing with extensions I simply stop, tether in and pull my rappel line down to me and reset it then finish the rappel.
Nice idea to use the resources you have.

1 step aider and a step? Are you referring to the step on the stick?

I ask because I had thought about utilizing a strap on step at times to help me get a little more height out of each move up.

Is it just me or does that stick look just about exactly like the old summit bucksteps?
The step and standoff are a single unit but that’s about all they have in common. I’ve always wanted to try the buck steps as they are still available but I’m borderline on the weight limit.

Yeah, I’m talking about the bottom step of the stick. My bad for not being more clear on that

Great video @bowhunter15 and thanks for the shout out! Since I have @dalton916's credit card memorized, can I just pay your commissions with that?? It won't be a lot though, since I think he has limits on his credit card. Most of his orders are $1.19 or less. :tearsofjoy: :sunglasses::laughing:

Knucklehead.....

I need another one, but I’m gunshy now after getting chastised

@DanO you ever explored having something like this fabricated? A similar platform style step to go on 1" tubing.

No, I was waiting on TETHRD to come out with these and didn't want to steal their show. Saw them at SaddlePalooza. I could look into it and get a telescopic mini stick with platforms like this but also a slanted front edge. I'm liking the Scout option myself, working well for me but haven't hunted from it yet.

The video is great and the stick is cool.
So are the interesting small ideas that I can use. The nite ize used to keep the tether from sliding was an idea I liked. And there is a sliding knot some use.
This is a simple idea.
I went out and tried this on a tether tonight. I like it. A very large cable tie with a small tail. It slides on the rope nicely and keeps the tether in place.

Carl Kossuth from Tethrd I believe designed that stick. He had it at the St. Louis Tethrd teach n train. He was demonstrating the same method that Garrett showed. It is a cool stick and very light weight. It is also very custom and unavailable for now he stated.

DanO. Can you make an aider like the one used in the video????
