Sewing Machine Deals for the DIY Guys

Both are industrial model but the 31-15 i believe is a drop or single feed machine and the 111w models (not all but some) are compound feed machines (walking dog). Basically one feeds fabric just using the bottom plate moving the teeth, the other moves using a walking motion of the foot as well as the bottom teeth. Triple feed does both plus the needle moves with one of the dogs. My understanding is the 111ws are the OGs and everyone else copied this style of machine.

looks like the 111w can take some heavier thread as well? Not sure on the lift of the 111w. You’ll find guys on leather forums talking about the 111w because they can do thick material.

mom personally looking for a 111w or 211 unless someone has a good reason to change my mind. Hopefully we can both learn together.

Thank you. I’m waiting for a model number on the pfaff but if it isn’t a walking foot then I’m going to pick up the 111

I am no expert so you may want to wait for someone who is extra confident in their stuff to chime in!

Also, make sure to get the full singer part number 111W??? some models differ significantly from similar model number to number. If it is in fact a 111W100 this claims it is a compound feed which would be great. It may not have reverse, but isn't an issue to me. I am not familiar with the needle systems but make sure you can get parts and stuff it too, because you'll likely have to fix minor things.

This is compound feed which feeds backwards with lower feed dogs, one upper foot and needle, thus triple. The other GIFs are not needle feed if you look carefully. The needle only moves up and down.

Yea i was thinking compound meant walking dog instead of triple feed. Thanks for clarifying.

I think the 111w100 is a needle feed though.. looks like the old manuals referred to this as compound feed (drop feed + needle feed)1624569683453.png

This video explains it all better than i can

I have a Mercury clone of a Consew 205 and it is top and bottom feed but not needle feed. It still works pretty well.
I still want a triple feed.

Looks pretty cool to me! Have you made any new saddles for this season?

It is a 111w100. A local guy buys and restores singers all the time. Usually his prices are really high. He does have a few juki but he’s asking more than I can afford

The strap I am sewing in the previous video was going to be a new saddle but it became my 8 inch wide backband and sewing was stopped short at that point. Now, I have a back saddle as well as a butt saddle. :mask:

I have a 111 and the lift on the foot is 1/2". It's a needle feed machine Where the needle pushes through the material then pulls it forward. Not a straight up and down motion. It will handle 138 thread.

As far as parts go for the old machines, I was amazed when I walked into Toledo Industrial sewing machines with my long neglected 111. The repairman said to me, you'll need this and this and one of these and just started pulling parts out of bins. I was amazed that not only were parts still available but he had them in stock. Mine hadn't had any updates in so long it still had the cloth, fiber type timing belt.

This guy is asking $400 with a table and new clutch motor. I’m not sure it’s the right way to go. I might just wait

While I feel it’s really dependent on your location, that’s more than I’d pay. I’m in south central Wisconsin. I’ve scored a tacsew t11-155 for $200, a singer 111g156 for $125, a Juki dnu-1541 for $400 and a pfaff 545 H4 for $500. All had clutch motors that i changed to servos, but all worked just fine. A few required a good cleaning to get them going but nothing major.
My requirements were compound feed and reverse. I still check Craigslist and marketplace constantly for great deals. I’ve missed a few great deals locally by not being quick enough. It’s hard to find a great deal on these if you feel the need to purchase right now. If you can wait it out and watch you’ll have better luck. Luckily I’m in an area where these pop up fairly often. This may not be the case for you.
