I was having trouble with the needle sticking in coated cordura...looking for solutions I stumbled across this.

Any consensus on what may be the best newer model of Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine to purchase (Amazon link??) for the up and coming DIY saddle guy? It was mentioned in the OP that @g2outdoors has a newer model he uses. Maybe he can tell me which is the best machine and needle for our purposes?

Correct me if I'm wrong please....according to what I found, the Gutermann tera 40 is a tex 75. The Coats s971 outdoor poly thread is a tex 90. I know everyone uses/recommends the gutermann but the coats is easier access for me. Is this thread fine for the intention?

@MikeH

The Coats thread would likely be fine...IF your machine can handle it. Generally speaking, most home machines are maxed out with the Size 69/Tex 70 thread. Threads above that size typically require a heavier duty machine capable of accepting larger needles. I am certain my home machines would struggle (if not be unusable) with thread larger than size 69/tex 70.

The Gutterman TERA 40 is commonly recommended because it is high quality and feeds nice while still being able to be used in most home machines. I ordered mine from wawak.com and had it within a couple of days.

How can you tell if it can handle it? Mine seems to be feeding the thread fine, with the denim needle (110?).

Trust me, your machine will let you know if it can handle it. It will bog down on multiple layers of webbing, stitch loops will be crappy, thread binds or breaks, bobbin backlashes, the list goes on. If your particular machine is running it fine, go with it.

I know what you mean. I had some thread that the machine definitely did not like.

My stitches seem strong enough with the tex90, and are holding under weight tests but I can’t get them to look perfect like they do in “textbooks”.

You won’t be able to consistently make them look perfect. Only an automated machine can do that every time. Even with as many Versa Straps as I’ve made over the last two weeks, I can’t get all of my stitches perfect every time. They’re strong as hell no doubt, but they’re not all identical.

What machine and thread, bobbin and needle do you use?

I was asking you. I should have addressed it to you.

Well that can get complicated but here’s a quick rundown. Here are the two machines I currently own.

Here is the standard foot machine.

Here is my walking foot.

The bobbins for each machine are very different. The walking foot bobbin (left) is pretty massive compared to the other one.

This is so it can hold a large volume of heavy duty thread. T90 - T135 is what I normally run in the walking foot. My go to needle size for it is a #22, but I’ll run anything from a #18 - #24 in it.

My standard machine is awesome for lighter weight projects, SYS Haulers, silnylon shelters, etc. I usually run a T70 thread in it and needles ranging from a #14 - # 18.
