Sewing Resources and Information

I just got my V138 polyester thread. 21 lbs break strength on this compared to V92 Kevlar at 30 lbs break strength. Kevlar rocks.

I picked up a 2lb spool of 138 polyester in gray off of eBay for $20 and free shipping. I see they upped the shipping to $8.40 but it’s still a great price for a 32 ounce cone.

I figured out why my $12 Industrial Singer was binding. The following videos tell all. @Weldabeast what would you recommend? Boat anchor? :D
I cut some bed frames and made some high carbon steel plates for strengthening the cracked frame of my Singer 281-1. I drilled and put bolts through. I have to get shorter bolts to fit better but the machine is not binding now even without the wood block wedging the crack shut. The crack does not visibly open when the wood block is inserted or removed. The bed frame steel was incredibly tough to drill with high speed steel drill bits. Thank you @Weldabeast for the advice. This should work great once I get it finalized.

I ordered a bunch of industrial sewing machine parts on Ebay from a supplier located in Wuhan, China. I wonder if they will provide a case of Corona for free? They seem to be sitting at a destination port somewhere. I just checked and they are in Monroe Township, NJ. I bought an oil pan wth this order and I got a gallon of sewing machine oil today. I hope I don't get Corona.

I cut my industrial sewing machine table to fit larger machines and an oil pan for the 281-1.
Front porch thermometer. Previous photo in post 363 shows the longer machines in wheelie mode. :D
I have to rout out the corner depressions for the pan and machines and grind down the pan a little since it doesn't fit the 281-1 exactly. I can make it close enough to work. The Mercury does not have an oil pump so does not use an oil pan.

Routed the corners today after a brunch of pork shoulder that has been cooking since Friday. It just keeps getting better.

Freehand Routing

Oil Pan Fit

Oil pan does not fit the machine exactly. I have to grind down a ridge or two to make it fit.

Sewing machine fit with no oil pan. I still have to put bumpers in the corners. The originals are felt. What is best?

People have warned against close spaced stitching on this thread. Here is why.
The Singer 281-1 should be able to sew a few saddles.

I got the oil pan set up and the oil is now rusty. I have to add pads at the corners to quiet it down a little.

What motor do you have on this one? I saw Enduro?

I still need a motor, belt, oil and an adjustment on my machine. When I was cranking it by hand it wasn't picking up the thread on the bottum side and you could tell that the timing was off because it was eating into the thread holder on the bottom.

I bought the Enduro from this seller in 110V. He only had a few at the time. He still has plenty of 220V models if you have 220V available.

I just found out I have access to a Kenmore 158.12120 model sewing machine. I dont know where to find specs on an older machine like this.
I know it is from the 80’s timeframe. Anyone ever used this style machine that could provide some help? Would this machine be capable of stitching straps on a backpack, or even possibly sewing a saddle??

If it weighs more than 30 lbs it should have a metal frame and should work well. Even a lighter one will work although it might break on heavy webbing. I use size 18 needles and Guttermans upholstery thread from Joanns fabrics for everything except saddle weight bearing joints but this V69 thread will work for that as well as others have shown.

Some of those later metal machines have plastic gears, and they frequently strip, especially when sewing heavier materials. They are cheap, but time-consuming to replace.

You can remove the top cover to check the gears with usually just a screw or two (sometimes none).
