Sewing Resources and Information

I have looked at other clones as well for the zig zag stitch mostly ebay. Rex, omega and sewline.
I found the sewline triple with table and motor for less than a grand shipped.
The other thing about the sailrite is the upgraded motor.
The more I look at stuff and past experience of going the cheaper route the more I am leaning toward the fabricator.

if anyone else has opinions or first hand experience with these machines would be great.

What is zig zag stitching good for? Where is a good place online to buy parts for my Singer 15-91? My 15-91 needs a power cord, a tire for the bobbin rewinder, a shade for the lampholder, a bobbin case, a bobbin, a spool holder rod and I have to fix the insulation around the controller. I think the controller mounts under the cabinet and connects to a knee bar.

I need the zig zag stitching for button holes for pants (along other things) and it helps to keep some fabrics from fraying with a stitch along the end. I would like the walking foot for better feeding of lighter weight fabrics for tarps, hammocks, etc.

Technically a bar tack is a zigzag stitch with the distance between the points set to a very short distance.

I did see a video where the presenter mentioned using zig zag for bar tacking. I guess a typical lighter weight machine would have a problem bar tacking webbing and the W shaped stitching anyway is supposed to have greater strength. I have my eye on a Singer 237 which is recommended by someone on Youtube as a general purpose semi heavy duty machine. If it's price is reduced I will buy it if it's still there.

My progression of interests in the last several years goes like this:
1. AR15s
2. Savage bolt action rifles
3. Crossbows and archery
4. Saddlehunting and climbing equipment
5. Sewing machines
Thank God when my interest changes, I stop spending on the last interest or I would be broke. :D ;):)

That is my issue, I have too many hobbies now.....

I went to the thrift store this morning and bought a Singer 404 for $30 with a bunch of attachments including zig zag and another wooden table for it. :( The 2 wooden tables are in the garage. All these model numbers are confusing. Why don't they print the model number on the machine. I am done for now. Yeah, right.

Funny how addictive it can be. I picked up my old Kenmore for cheap. The got a great deal on my Singer 201. Still have both....and for some reason I keep an eye on what gets listed locally. I'd love to stumble across a cheap industrial machine. I've got nothing but time :)

I used Rem Oil to get the 404 working smooth and oiled the linkages and greased the gears. I loaded a prespooled bobbin from Wal**** and a spool of thread and proceeded to sew the heck out of a paper towel. The towel broke before the thread. It is smooth. It is the only complete machine out of the four I own. I have to order parts.

Would a Riccar 570 be sufficient for sewing small amounts of webbing once in a while?

I bought a bobbin case from Joann fabrics for my Singer 15-91. I found there are 2 types of bobbin cases which seem to be mirror images of each other. They are described as 11 o'clock finger and 1 o'clock finger. The 1 o'clock from Joann's does not fit my 15-91. I ordered the correct one from ebay but I don't have it yet. If you look carefully the following link shows the two different types. My Singer 227M uses the 1 o'clock finger. Before I noticed this, I thought the shuttle might be bent on my 15-91 so I tried a pair of pliers and a part of the casting broke off. I think it is a non critical area but until I get the correct case I will not know if I have to buy a new bobbin case shuttle. I got confused as to which way the finger points going to which machine. The 15 class came first then the other class (66?) so 11 o'clock comes first then 1 o'clock during daylight. This is the order that the cases fit. There is not much information about this on the internet that I have been able to find anyhow.
Edit: class 66 is a horizontal drop in bobbin. I did not know this when I first posted.

What part of the shuttle did you break? Can you post a picture. I should be able to tell you if it’s a critical area or not.

I broke about 1/4" from the end next to the hook. I will see if it works when I get the correct bobbin holder, if not, I will file and smooth, if not, buy a new one. Hey that's a flowchart. :D Have you encountered the bobbin case differences before? If mine was with the machine I never would have noticed.

Filing and smoothing may work. If not, they normally aren’t too expensive.

Yes, there are a ton of different bobbin cases. Different manufacturers will use different styles, and even different styles in different models of the same brand.

Let us know how it works when you get the bobbin case in.

I just saw this video about the Speedy Stitcher and thought it belonged in the sewing resources thread.

Great video on sewing webbing! Can anyone comment on the type of needle that is best to use for webbing? I bought some size 18 universal singer needles to use with my gutterman tera40 thread. Ive read that using the wrong needle can cut some of the webbing fibers reducing the overall strength of the webbing.

I just used the Singer size 18 needles today to sew some webbing for the first time with Gutterman Upholstery thread which looks like tera40. I posted about it here. The size 18 Singer needles don't have the sharp edge like the Speedy Stitcher needles.
