Sewn eye and thread strength

I know splicing and sewing is fun and the rope packs down better....but for that amount of rope you can just tie a knot and never worry that you're gonna die
I think you have a more than valid point. The reason to slice shouldn't be too pack tighter into you're pack. The reason for splicing is that a properly sliced eye is supposed to maintain 100% if the ropes strength.

If I recall, the sewn eyes are sewn with a stitch that if one stitch or the knot comes undone, then it will not fully unravel like a zipper and totally fail.

That would be my main concern with these DIY sewing jobs. Yeah, whole thing is very strong but every stitch might be a potential weakest link to total failure.
