Found a decent deadhead Saturday afternoon.

I was pretty stoked to find one with my crew yesterday! First one of the year.

Actually this was textbook how to find sheds, and textbook why I rarely found sheds. We were moving S-L-O-W because little legs and mountain laurel are quite a combo. My little dude had just taken a couple spills and was not happy. Working our way out along a deer-y point, really weaving around to find the best pathways and I peeped this on the trail. I spent 20 minutes while they ravaged our snack supply looking for the match, but no dice.

Usually when I am scouting on my own, I don't much pickle around and intentionally look for them. I just stumble into them once in awhile. I probably would have cruised right through this area and not found it if I was solo.

Went home and checked the card we picked up and looks like I got him right before he shed.

And then one still holding onto both sides last week also. Most have certainly dropped though, already have pictures of a few with nubbins starting to grow over the pedicle scab also.

Have a little bit of history with this buck. Watched him on an observation sit in Aug, had him on cam a good amount during the season and after, and pretty sure I narrowed down his bedding. I got a good feeling about hunting him this fall. He's very aggressive and territorial, hoping he stays that way.

Found a shed and some deads today. Pretty sure I matched the buck to one I had on camera. Might be a decent public land 8+ next season. The two dead ones I'm pretty sure were eaten by coyotes. I have lots of coyotes on camera there. Plus, what are the odds that two winter kills happened next to each other? I couldn't find the heads for the dead ones.

I walked five miles today. Found a dead little buck. Looked him all over and couldn't find a mark on him???

Of course I didn’t find any sheds.
Strange you did and the coyotes didn't. Near a road?

Yeah I'm shocked too. It's a mile behind my house and we have coyotes howling just about every night. It was maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile from the nearest road. I'm guessing it died some time yesterday.

Looks like a fresh kill.

You may be right. The only reason I say yesterday is because I rolled him over and the ground under him was packed down and there was sparse hair in it like he was there for a while. His eyes weren't shriveled up yet and he wasn't bloated though. So it could have died last night or early this morning.

Ukrainian girl who’s friends with our daughter, their family came to US about a year ago, she and her dad came with me Sunday to plant trees... guy walks 20 yards through some grass by the food plot, finds a nice 5 side, walks another 15 yards finds our best bucks other side (first shed found earlier this year). Pretty good 15 minute shed hunting career!846F1A55-E30C-41A5-A25E-7C79941FC39E.jpegB627EFF9-9EE6-4BBD-B464-9D53DD6DEA70.jpeg
