Shot Placement Thoughts/Broadhead Failure?

Your arrow is out there somewhere I bet it zipped through there so fast it’s way past the deer.

I agree with you.
Yes. But who aims for shoulders? Most guys don’t shoot a heavy enough arrow that a COC head would penetrate good and surly not pass through with any head.
I don’t feel the need to try to pin a deer down. A good double lung with a sharp blade will put them down within sight most times.
Agreed. He needed to put the arrow up and away anyways though? I don’t think he hit the deer that low and tight to the elbow on purpose.

And I think we all agree 9 out of 10 times that’s a dead deer. We’re just trying to guesstimate on this instance.

ranch fairy wants people to tuck it as close to the shoulder as possible.....and a lot of people shooting his adult arrows think they can shoot through any part of a deer at any angle....of course that is not officially prescribed dogma once it is questioned out loud

I've unfortunately lost enough on shots similar to those to switch up my aiming point. When I'm on the ground I just aim for the double lung and forget the heart they and they won't go far. I feel like a double lung has less margin for error and is a much bigger target.

Besides who wants to eat a heart with a hole in the middle of it!!!

some dude on youtube with a classic con man personality that knows if you say stuff counter to established wisdom and make people feel smart when agreeing with you and dumb for not that it will get you views and make some people think you are a genius or something....he's largely responsible for people going to heavy arrows that are front heavy with tiny single bevel heads that they then try to thread as close to the shoulder as possible because he's a respiratory therapist and so he knows about these things

I’ve killed dumpster truck loads of deer and never needed a super heavy, COC head and a heart shot. Don’t think I’ve ever had all three on the same deer. I have not shot heavy arrows since carbon arrows came out, haven’t shot COC head since Nap spitfires came out but I have definitely keyholed some hearts and most not on purpose.

He’s a freaking deer respiratory therapist? Lol.

J/k lol

That was within an inch of where I held just because it was a longer shot and a lot of times they’ll drop a couple inches.

Well good shot then. It just didn’t work out this time for what ever reason.
Need to cut her open and have a look inside!!

I’d say 3-4 inches too low and 2” too far towards head. When a deer reacts to sound of the bow, your shot ends up higher, not lower.

Yea, I held there thinking the reaction would move the impact up a couple inches but it didn’t react I guess

I would aim 4” higher and 1-2” back if broadside. I always go for double lung and err on the side of liver and guts cause if I make good decisions I will recover the deer. I have never recovered a single lung shot or shoulder hit deer. Next time I would suggest you cut her open to actually investigate what you hit. You don’t get a chance to gain intel like that often. I agree with @ImThere that you probably clipped the bottom of the heart or lungs.

Here is a pic of a buck I shot last year. The shot was a little low and I didn’t realize ever so slightly quartering to. I jumped him 8 hours after the shot and he probably lived at least 6 hours after that if not more before I recovered him the next morning. This shot had blood pouring out like a river while I watched him run off. I followed it at a walking pace til his first bed. They are amazing creatures and small differences in where you hit and angles can make a big difference. This shot left a 2” hole through the center of the liver.

sorry about that.... I can say that sometimes it is just a mystery. I have taken out two lungs and the top of the heart on a shot before and the cavity filled with blood. Not a drop of blood on the ground. Found it the next morning with only a frozen blob of blood the width of a pinkie finger and 1/4 the length clinging to the exit wound.

Question a little off topic.....

In a situation like this.....found after too long and meat spoils, what do u do next? There are laws/rules against "wanton waste" in my state.
Knock on wood, it hasn't happened to me... And honestly never thought about it till now

Did you try and recover it with good faith?

I’ve lost deer due to poor shot placement and did everything I could to recover it. In those cases, I “burned” the tag and either packed up or hunted a bonus tag. I think if I found it long after any hope the meat was good, it would depend on the sex. A doe I’d probably leave and let the scavengers get a meal. A buck I’d probably bring back for the skull and leave the rest for the scavengers.

In either case, that tag if filled.

Yeah... My first thought was to leave it to benefit the rest of the animals/insects but I didn't know if those laws make u collect the spoiled carcass....

I can't say I would change your shot much next time. Reality is that crap happens. I get that is sucks. There are very few things the hurt me like making buzzard/coyote food. But you took a good ethical shot that was off by very little.
