Single stick climbing technique

My 15" Helium weighs 1.8 lbs in use. About as light as any stick you can get and very compact. Fully worth cutting down to me. I also did the mod and drilled out the offsets so the same bolts that holds the steps holds them and eliminated 2 bolts off the stick.

Wow that video really makes the one stick method look pretty easy. As many times as you are clamping and re-clamping the stick it would seem that it would make things a lot easier.

I just weighed 2 steps and a 7 inch cutoff piece from a Helium stick at 9.6 ounces. Hardly seems worth it when you are carrying one stick.
For me its more about the pack-ability than the weight. The shorter stick fits fully in the pouch of the turkey vest that I use for a pack and that keeps it from snagging on brush or clanking off stuff when I walk in.

I get the compact size but I am confused about those that say you only use the bottom steps. I tried the method today a little but I used all three set of steps to get the tether as high as I could get it while standing on top step set. I would think this would help eliminate how many “moves” it takes to get to 20-25’.

If you stand on the top step of the stick and set your tether as high as you can reach, how do you reach down to unbuckle the stick? Are you hanging upside down from your saddle? I guess it could be done but I think I am too old to try. :grinning:

I swing to side of the tree, reach down and pull the stick up a bit. Then I just pop the rope out of the cam cleat but I have a 32.5” bow DL (long arms). Dont get me wrong, I am not proficient at any climbing method that is less than 3 full climbing sticks/multi aider and currently hate anything less than the 3. That has me thinking. What if you use a longer 8mm rope with a carabiner tied to the end for the cam cleat stick. You clip the biner onto your saddle. Once you get to the top step and put tether up as high as you can reach, just pop the cammed rope from your saddle and pull the stick up. This way you dont have to reach and it minimizes the time the stick is not attached and a dropping possibility. You would just need to make sure it doesnt come out of cam when you are not ready. Although, since you are standing on it most of the time, the tension will prevent it from being pulled free, I imagine.

Im in the same boat. Im looking for a LW cam buckle strap but I also have a ronstan large cam cleat on the way. What would be best rope to use on the cam cleat? Also, how do you remove rope after you rappel if you use a carabiner?

I use Samson 8mm accessory cord. I've also used 1/4" Amsteel, but the cleat really compresses it so it's a little harder to pull out than the accessory cord.

I did one last practice climb before the season starts, single-sticking with the JX3. Man this thing tempts me to go all in and sell all my other gear.

I used the Stacked Outdoors stick and have to say that while the cam cleat of the Muddy Pro is highly effective, I really like this polymer stick, especially in conjunction with the Hybrid. Light, quiet, no moving parts, sturdy with big foot surface area. I dangle a 48" aider woven around the top bracket and through the slots in the stick so that it dangles 24" below the bottom step. The cam buckle strap is not as efficient as the cam cleat on the Muddy, but it is not hard to do, especially from the solid and comfortable seat of the JX3.

I think if you intend on using your top step of your climbing stick as a part of your platform setup you can't beat the SO stick. The company sells individual sticks at a reasonable price. Check em out if it speaks to you.

You are climbing the same way I am. My JX3 and my stacked outdoors single stick. I have not sold the rest of my stands but I am seriously thinking about it. I don’t see me using anything else from here on out

I’d really like to master this method but every time I try it I look and feel like a bumbling idiot and I bail on it. If I could get it down I think it’s a great way to climb.

This video has given me some confidence to try it again. Did it last year and had a really hard time with it but I think I was over extending and I also was hanging just on my harness loop, which is really rough. Going to try it using the full tether and pay closer attention to where exactly I set the stick each time. I also think the aider I have on my stick is too long. I’m going on a trip in mid October and it’s a decent size piece of property and I want to be able to hike a good way in.

@parkersdad or @TNSTAAFL ...would one of you mind doing a quick video of climbing with the single Stacked Outdoors stick? I'm almost sold on getting one of those sticks and trying it myself but would love to see a video first.

Uhhh.... I'm not much of a video guy. I could try with my phone maybe. Don't have a YouTube channel or anything to upload to.
I'm not sure you would see much that is different from other 1-stick videos out there (other than an old fat ass trying to imitate others!).

Just set stick about chin high, put foot in loop, step up on to stick. Raise tether as high as you can, sit down, move stick. Repeat.

It helps to set your tether to the side of the tree so you can pivot out of the way of the stick.

Lol I totally understand. I’m not a video guy either nor am I one of these skinny guys so I feel your pain.

I'd just be interested in how aider attaches to the stacked outdoors stick, I really want to order one.
I can post a picture of mine, but it is nothing fancy. I bought the orange 48" sewn sling off Amazon. I just run it over top standoffs, through a few of the middle slots (to get the length right), then dangle thre rest down the front. Hangs about 24" below bottom step. Boom. 1-step aider.
