Hello all, I’m new to all this. Got me a Tethrd Phantom a couple weeks ago and have been playing with it to get comfortable and doing everything from ground level. I did purchase a set of 20” Hawk Heliums as well. I am Thinking I would like to do some one sticking in the future as well. The video posted by Cain seems very detailed and deliberate and quite doable and probably where I’d start out. I am considering purchasing a single stick for this sole purpose for those long hauls deep in. Having a hard time deciding between an EWO stick and a Shikar. Can I get some advice? Any users have experience with both of them for comparison sake? Thank you in advance,
Matt

Since you have a set of 20” sticks then just use one of those sticks for your one sticking. I’d also buy a three step aider from Backwoods Mobile Gear and tell him what your sticks are. Most would recommend a two step aider, but I strongly recommend a 3 step aider with each step 13” apart. That is 39” plus your 20” stick. Theoretically you’ll be able to move 4-6 feet with each transition. The three step aider allows you to get your foot in the bottom step and then climb up. I did one sticking all last year and that three step aider is the perfect addition.

Thanks, I’m an impulse buyer and even tho I know I don’t need it, I just saw that OOAL HAD THE 20% off and I had been contemplating between the Shikar and the EWO one. I figure if I decide I want one later, I probably won’t be able to get one. If I have one and decide it’s not for me, I’m sure I can sell it on here

I have shikar mini for mine with a scout platform. Light and compact and very well designed/built.

Last weekend I put my eyes on one of EWO featherlight builds... its legit!

Those two companies are not going to sell out. Just might have a few week delay.

I’d give it a good test with the hawk first to see if 1-sticking is for you.

I have two shikars...one mini and one 17". The 17 has a straight scout on the top step and the mini has two steps. Both have been set up as a permanent stick with 3 step aiders for a single/double stick method of climbing. . If these don't wok out then I'll sell both of them and buy the EWO featherlite stick.

I have an EWO featherstick cut to 15 inches and a single sewn in aider. The stick is great. You cant go wrong. Theres a reason you rarely see them in the classifieds!

What configuration did you go with? I’ve been eyeballing these.

Is anyone replacing with a cam or using a daisy chain of some sort to attach?

I went with the 20” and angled double steps for the top and bottom. The angled step makes my footing feel more secure. The daisy chain was cheap enough so I threw that in the order to try too. If I don’t like it I’ll just use a lone wolf adjustable strap like I usually do. Sure hope the daisy chain is good tho.

The cam thing is cool but not for me I don’t think. Makes me too nervous being a mechanical moving part that could fail or make unnecessary noise. And I know I’d always be afraid it would somehow kick the rope out of the jaws or my boot would accidentally bump it out or something. One of the biggest reasons I went with this stick is because it has no moving parts.

I also have an AmSteel 1 step aider originally meant for a beast stick that I’m going to attach to it while putting it together.

One last mod I’m going to do is add stainless steel locking washers to the stand off bolts so hopefully they don’t come loose on me down the road. I don’t like when cheaper sticks have done that after a few uses.

Just got my EWO stick in. Planning to use amsteel daisy chain, that's what I've been using recently with my Lone Wolf sticks. I'm using a 24" swaider with coated j-hook to hook on the bottom step to keep from fishing my foot through a aider on each step.

Carbon cam cleat is what I added to my EWO stick. This is what I prefer for one sticking
