So ya wanna build a pack?

Sg solo, my avail is almost identical just smaller. The horseshoe zipper for me was a gamechanger and the reason I went from the kuiu to the sg as my main pack. The shiny xpac is also a bonus for cleaning ease. I'll get the ultra bag off its frame and take pics of that. They're relatively simple, just panels as you can see when they are inside out.

Alright fellas, checking back in here. I found an old backpack of mine in the attic and took the seam ripper and got to work. I have been slowly deconstructing it and it has really helped me understand what is involved. It really is just about breaking the pack down into components and fabricating those, then you just sew the components together. I am getting closer to putting a pack together for sure.

I also want to share this awesome gear resource I found on reddit which has tons of great links and ideas in the wiki as well as some patterns. Lots of awesome DIY gear projects to peruse.

I received my XSuede samples today. Best I can tell it has the polyester suede face, 22 degree X-Ply strands, and then the PET film over the X-ply. There is no apparent taffetta backing for abrasion resistance. This could make a nice quiet and waterproof hunting pack, but I'm not sure it will stand up to hard use, heavy loads, or a lot of abrasion without a tougher lining.... which kind of kills the idea in the first place.

It's too bad it isn't a polyester face (quiet) with a 210D nylon backing or some other backing that can hold the seams together better. I'm sure it would be extremely expensive to have a roll of something like that custom made.

MYOG is a great resource. I've posted some of my projects in there over the years.

Did you order that from material from Rockywoods? (I can't remember where you were going to get it from). If so their x suede is 7 ounces a square yard. It should be pretty strong.... At least for that weight it should be.

Definitely an expensive experiment when dealing with any x-pac material though.

I did. The weight is from the polyester face, but that polyester isn't going to stand up to any real abuse or load. I expect seams will stretch and tear the fabric up to the xply

Can’t wait to see the build. Been pondering building my own pack tired of modding all my current packs. Want all the features all at once so I’m definitely gonna follow

Pack build is ongoing... lots of planning and thinking as it comes together. I am certainly learning a lot! I am trying to tackle elastic edge binding some side dump pockets next. I have the main panels of the body put together, the shoulder straps fabricated, the sheet cut for the internal frame. I have designed and cut, but not constructed, the backrest portion yet. This is a great way to figure out some gear fabrication techniques that is for sure!

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

I'm going to start a DIY MR Pop Up soon, and plan to base the first pack on the 18 and/or Treehouse. But first I've gotta tackle the frame.
Document if you can! Its been really hard for me to document anything as there is so much trial and error etc. But you have way more experience than I do so you may be better at it!

Sure thing, but don't hold your breath... I don't expect to work on it much until I finish college classes in May.
