sort of new to hunting in general and could us some advice.

Are there any seasoned hunters that would be willing to set aside a day one weekend to help a few of us newbs? What i know that is needed right now is someone with the experience looking for sign, finding that sign and coming up with a plan to execute based off that sign. Bowhunterchuck What about you? would you feel like helping us out?

No details yet . It's a plan in the works

Gotcha. Is there like a state you guys are talking about at least? Usually any meet ups are really far away from me so was just curious how far this one might be.

Westdesign03, Sorry for the confusion in my post. It started off as a basic question on scouting since i dont have a lot of knowledge in that area and I'm still green when it comes to hunting. Then someone suggested that a few of us local SC hunters get together with a seasoned hunter that might be willing to help us Green hunters for this up and coming season.

I can see something coming together for sure here. I like it. Should we do it in next couple weeks while they are still on winter patterns if this is a winter pattern lol

No problem lol. SC is pretty far away for me to attend. Hope you guys are able to meet up and learn from each other.

I haven't seen this mentioned yet so I'll give it to you straight. Forget all the "big buck" mumbo jumbo you see on TV. Find yourself some oaks putting down acorns, or beech trees putting down beech nuts, or apple trees putting down apples, or some turnips in a field, or some clover, or briars that looked like they've been bit off, then look for some fresh deer poop. If you can find this thing(s) along an edge of some sort, set up downwind and kill something.

Corners of fields. Find the trails that come out into a field in the back corner then back up into the woods some. Heck, if its thick on the field edge where it meets the woods, set up downwind and kill something.

Go small game hunting and pay attention to what you are seeing. You get into some rabbits you might also be in some good deer territory. Go turkey hunting. In my experience, deer and turkeys will frequent many of the same areas and play lookout for each other. This is why a few soft yelps on a mouth call can gain you a little ground with deer. You find a rather large area on a hillside where the turkeys are tearing it up feeding, very strong chance deer are hitting it too. Set up downwind and kill something.

Walk the banks on creeks and find where the deer are crossing. You will KNOW when you find a good crossing, there won't be a couple tracks, or a few, they will have the crossing beat into the mud and torn up. Set up downwind and kill something.

Last, and follow along here, you want to get good at killing stuff, you have to kill stuff. I know that sounds obvious, but brother, there is a whole generation of folks that think killing deer equates to some stupid number of antler inches. Antlers are cool, and I have several on the wall, but I also enjoy the heck out of eating and I'll fill every tag I have.

I’d buy a compass.

This, and a map, and learn how to use them. And don’t forget a flashlight.

I was into the biggest bucks I’ve chanced early on in my hunting because I was constantly getting lost. There were some moments where a spare flashlight, compass, and map could have really helped and I was lucky to find my way out of the timber and junk.

I see more deer now, and have some luck on nice bucks now and then, but have seen fewer monster bucks now that I “know what I’m doing.”

Honestly, sounds like you are looking into good spots, and you’ll get into good deer eventually if you can find the time to put in some days in those areas.

Best of luck to you.

Bud, I agree but what i see you explaining is focus on the habitat. Which can be a lot. For example where I plan on hunting and keep in mind its just a small section that im looking at right now. But it's 2000 plus acres and trying to find a tree thats dropping nuts seems like a needle in a hay stack full of needles. Not all produce or even drop. I agree that its a good place to set up and I did that this past year and didnt even see a thing because they just were not there. I think someone could have better luck following trails and bumping deer. At least you would know its an active trail or and active bed. I also agree with you. I dont care if it's a buck or doe. I want meat on the table.. My issue is I just cant seem to find the sign . Or I'm either too early or too late .

It would be awesome to make some out of state hunting buddies!

Let me tell Y'all what happened to me just about every time I went out to hunt this past season. My work schedule sucks by the way. I work Monday through Friday and every other Saturday off on Sundays. To start with I didn't my permit until late in the season and thats my fault. So I got a late start. About mid October. The first time I went out was for a morning sit. Didnt see a thing and after 3 hours I was tired of sitting and frustrated but I stuck it out until about noon. So I went back the next day on Sunday to scout since it's wma no hunting on Sunday. I was able to find a spot that was dropping acorns. I marked it on my phone and kept looking. Keep in mind the property is mostly all Pines in the center and very thick. With some good transitions of hardwoods on the out side edge. Hence the acorns I found. So on my next Saturday off I went back and planed on going to where I found the acorns. Headed in about 6 am or so and was fumbling around with my flashlight trying to find a tree and ended up shine some eyes. Snot Blow and gone So I continued to set up. Didnt see anything else that day. The next time i went to hunt I thought I was smart. Went in just as the sun came up. It was still kind of dark and about 25 yards in to the property I caught some movement Bout 15 yards in front of me. I was busted and a Doe was looking right at me. Stood there for about five minutes and she did mothing. But I knew if I moved then she was gone. She dropped her head and started grazing again but looked right back up, stomped a few times and whistled . I thought for sure I was busted then. but nope still there eating and facing my direction. I didnt know what to do at this point so I slowly dropped to one knee and started to raise my rifle. Thats when it happened, I heard a blow to my left and the one I was about to aim at took off. All I saw after that was 3 white flags bouncing off in front of me. The wind was in my face so the first deer dint wind me but other that i didnt see must have from behind me. so i left mad as hell.

Yes it would! My problem is I don’t even have any in-state hunting buddies lol. I’m the only one that really hunts that I know around here. I have one other friend that MIGHT come hunt with me once a year if I’m lucky.

I have a couple that hunt and they all use a rifle. I’m trying to stick one with the bow first.

Dude I tried with a bow a few seasons ago but no such luck. Could get within bow range so i witched to a rifle. But a bow is on my list for next year. I should have never sold the one a buddy gave me

In my state, we can’t use shouldered rifle cartridges, so compared to most other states, our gun season has got a bit of a handicap. The gun season is also quite short IMO. Only about a week long with another 2 bonus days a couple weeks later. I don’t mind gun season here but to be honest I’m glad it is as short as it is. Bow season is SOO much longer and more enjoyable to me. The entire experience is just different and to me better than any gun season. Once you get one under your belt with bow you’ll see what I mean.
