Splicing Predator rope

It was a nightmare. I can be done, but it sure wasn't worth it. I spliced it twice and hated every minute of it. I read that the cover on the Samson Predator is tighter than their other ropes, which confirms why it is so difficult.
Did you use a wire to pull the final bury? That made all the difference for me.

If you scroll through the comments I put some post up that make it pretty simple.

The more you do the easier it gets. Lol. Just did up 2 tethers in Predator, made up 2 prusik lines in oceans poly, and when my flex comes in, 2 more eyes on the bridge to go. The wire fid and the core taper helped a lot. I used a welding rod folded in two for the wire fid. It takes time to do them, and I use some gloves to avoid the blisters.
I literally just made two wire fids out of welding rod lol

How far do you need to bury the core past the Y? I went a full short fid length on the 1/2” fid and man was that a pain in ass! Battled it for a while. I think I am going to bury it half of what I did this time. Anyhow the tether is done. I don’t think there any more to milk on this rope. I only have two blisters...:oops:II

I don’t burry the core more than one inch past the crossover. I had to start over because it was impossible to burry it an entire 1/2 fid length. I also agree that predator rope it does not give like the rope in the video. It is one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It is much better with the home made wine fid! I used a metal skewer as a pusher and it worked great. I am proud to be using ropes I spliced but is was quite difficult.

Here are the manufacturer's recommended splicing instructions. One inch is a bit short and will most likely compromise the overall strength of your splice. I'm not saying you shouldn't use your rope, but that you should be aware of the risks before putting your life on the line (in the most literal sense).

That bury can be accomplished with a wire fid, some manipulation of the rope and a healthy dose of cussing. You shouldn't need a pusher rod for it.

Samson says the core bury only needs to go through the eye when splicing used rope, but says a short fid for new rope? New England Ropes says a long fid of bury, other rope companies say only the rope‘s diameter for the bury? I’ve read that when the splice was first invented the core bury was only half way in the eye. But they kept breaking at the end of the bury so they moved the bury end to fill up the eye, and beyond a short distance. Maybe the core bury only keeps the core from shifting in the cover, and the length isn’t as important as the taper being gradual?
