Splicing Predator rope

Excellent work from one predator rope splicer to another. May you never have to change your bridge length again!

I have one size 34" bridge spliced onto the saddle on one side, biner on the other. I also made another that is 38" or ~42" with a biner on both side to play with. I am hoping the 34" works fine. Seemed good on my test hang.

Now I am thinking... Do I need to lock stitch???

They say you should so that it does not "Walk it's way out", I use this Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl for throwing a few stitches; quick and strong all around repairs and for projects without breaking out a sewing machine. [See link below]. I don't do the full on Whipping like some splices require. I only put blind stiches in with the sewing awl

How necessary is it to lock stick it?

Just did 3 splices today for my linesman belt and tether, tried like hell in every way I could to get it to walk out and honestly dont see how it could be done.

Haha so true, I had the tethrd spliced rope and that was not lock stitched so was just kind of thinking to myself is it just an extra or is it actually necessary

I don't think it's likely to come undone under load. The lock stitch is more intended to keep the splice from backing out during normal handling while it's not under tension.

I tried lock stitching mine the best I could but what a pain! I broke the needle on the speedy stitcher half way through the last one.

Good info, I haven't tried yet and honestly am not sure if I am going to... it is super tight right past the Y so I'd imagine getting anything through there without splitting strands would be a nightmare.

I will prolly mark where the bury goes into the Y, use it alot at ground level, move the rope around a ton unloaded ect and if it moves then stitch it.

When I set my splice I had to whiplash into place. I don’t think it’s going anywhere.

I grew up in the wire rope industry (dad still in it after 40+ yrs). I would have to have him show me again how to do it but there is a way to splice an eye in double braid without having to lock stitch it. Done hundreds without it and all that were put on test bed passed. ( body breaks before eye breaks or pulls out. Been too long since I done it.) But there is a formula to use as far as sling length plus size of ey plus tail length. I remember last few inches of tail gets trimmed so far back to allow smooth transition to rope body.

The more you do the easier it gets. Lol. Just did up 2 tethers in Predator, made up 2 prusik lines in oceans poly, and when my flex comes in, 2 more eyes on the bridge to go. The wire fid and the core taper helped a lot. I used a welding rod folded in two for the wire fid. It takes time to do them, and I use some gloves to avoid the blisters.

I used this gentlemen's method the last time I spliced predator with pretty good success. The wire fid is the trick to get the core down thru the cover.

Can anyone attest to the strength of the splice? I mean, it sounds like lots of folks are doing this, but does the splice hold or will it come undone under load at the worst possible time? In other words, will you be as safe as with knots?

It will. It’s safer than knots. Knots reduce the strength of the rope by 50%. Splicing retains most of the ropes strength. You can lock stitch if you are worried for peace of mind. But it’s tough I broke a couple needles and just said screw it.

I always lock stitch them to make sure they don't loosen when not under load. When under load the rope constricts on itself helping the splice stay tight. I use a speedy stitcher for lock stitching.

Thanks. Would it be safe to say that if you don't see the eye getting larger that nothing is moving and there's nothing to worry about?

For sure! It took an hour to milk it tight... are you really concerned that it's going to come loose. Trust your work, but verify at ground level before going to hunting heights.

Thanks. I'm starting to feel better about this splicing thing. Now I just need to work up the courage to give it a try! Really appreciate your input.
