Squirrel hunting guns

I occasionally bring a .22 along with me when I hunt public land. I'll end a morning hunt with a couple of shots from the .22 at squirrels if the situation is right. I've moved towards using either a Ruger MKII or a Ruger Charger with a brace. Add in a suppressor and it remains relatively quiet and fun.

Were I come from a gut shot squirrel makes you sit at the ladies table. Not that I haven't done it, but there is no photographic evidence of it anywhere.
Can't eat a miss. I'm sure there are ladies that could outshoot you and me. :mask: Show some evidence you shot a squirrel.

With the 17HM2 the trajectory is within about 1/2 inch of line of sight out to 75 yards so those long shots are doable. With a 22, gut shots at that range would probably result in a non recovery. With the 17HM2 the shock is so overwhelming that any hit near the spine is instantly fatal, in my experience.

I have a Henry 22 magnum and absolutely love this gun. Open sights and have no problem shooting squirrels up to 100 yards. Just make sure to shoot different brands of shells and find out which one shoots the best. Congratulations on your new Henry.

Squirrels, in the trees, at 100yds, with iron sights? You should shoot competitively, you would win every time.

Headshots only with the 22 marlin magnum. It make skinning much easier. You don’t want a body shot.

I don't deny being shown up on shooting by ladies as my wife could out shoot me most of the time with a little .380 hand gun we used to have. I've not taken any pictures of squirrel kills as I just eat them but I've killed more than my share in the last 60 years because, like I stated they are mighty fine eating. Not meaning to disrespect the gut shooters out there as, like you said, can't eat a miss. I tend to throw a little humor around in the form of good natured ribbing. Glad you are throwing it right back at me.:)

I got a Henry this year too. I really did not need a new 22 but I just had to have a lever action lol..I have to say it is my favorite/most fun gun to hunt with. Of all the ammo I tried through it, it liked CCI Blazer the best...I am not complaining about that. I topped it with a junky 4x scope and the thing cant miss. It has no problem reaching out to 50 yards accurately.

Not in the woods. We hunt hickory trees that surround the cow fields so it’s basically wide open. Average shot is no longer than 30 yards but occasionally you do get that longer shot but it won’t be a head shot. If you know your gun then 100 yards is not out of the question. If sighted in at 50 yards it only drops 2” at 100. No sense being a hater, maybe you should spend more time at the range.

Got it scoped but now I need a hammer extension. Going to shoot it tomorrow see how it goes

Ruger American .22 with a suppressor on it. Stupid quiet and a really accurate and affordable gun.

I just got a Ruger American Compact 22wmr with iron sights, leopold raised rings, and a vortex crossfire. It's a little too compact, so a noncompact butt stock is in order. If I would have known how mean that bullet was I might have foregone the 22lr.

Can any Ruger or for that matter bolt action guys offer any insight on fit and cheek rests?
