SRT preset question

Im familiar with this knot but never used it for fear of it loosening. Even when I used to rock climb I never used it. Have you had it loosen while yanking on limbs and whatnot?

Not yet. The paracord grabs my rope pretty tight, plus I leave a relatively long tail on the double sheet bend. If you are worried about it coming loose, you could make it a triple or quadruple sheet bend.

This does not pertain to the question of presets, but rather to the attaching of the throw line to the climbing line.

I just melted a hole in the tag end of the climbing rope with a hot nail. Slip the throwline through the hole and tie a bowline in the throwline.

My current throwline is uhmwpe kite line. I spliced a whoopie sling style adjustable loop in it so I stick that through the hole I melted in the climbing line and slip it over the nub end of the climbing rope beyond the hole and cinch it down. Still testing this method.

I just started doing a little SRT this past season and have decided to add this technique into some of my presets as well. I climb a lot of straight plantation pine trees that have no, or very little, limbs of size at a reasonable height. My question is: what are some options for hitching your rope when there are no limbs/ forks in the tree? The best ive got so far is to take a stick or my spikes with me then climb up to install a screw in step or eyelet screw and use that to hold my girth hitch up. Sounds like it will work but I haven't attempted this yet.

What if you took a piece of rope or paracord and made 2 figure 8 loops with a couple feet of length between them. Get up the tree however you wish and girth hitch this setup to the tree so you have 1 loop hanging down.

Run a 40-60’ piece of paracord through this loop and connect the ends and leave it at the bottom of the tree.

When you come back haul your climbing rope up and through the paracord loop then pass it to the other side so of the tree so it ends up girth hitched at the top.

The preset paracord or rope figure 8 will be pressed against the tree but won’t affect the girth hitch.

This way you can do the entire setup with just a roll of paracord.
