Got tags for the January primitive weapons whitetail hunt on St Vincent Island. How would you go about setting up on an island in the gulf? Island is roughly 11k acres of sand dunes, marshes, and strips of slash pine and scrub oaks. I know I’ll need to key in on the oaks but I’ve never hunted terrain like this and I have no clue on where to start.

Michael really wrecked the island 10/2018. I haven't done the island but know folks who have for sambar. It's a really difficult place to hunt they say, because there are so many linear ridges (for Florida that is...lol) with linear wetlands in between. I'd just plan on picking out an area that looks good and plan to walk a long ways until you hit fresh sign. And remember with all the trees down and fresh growth coming up it's going to be a challenge just to walk through it! Good luck to ya!

I've never been but reading up on it I do remember u need to double check on some of the rules. If I remember correctly u gotta stop hunting really early in the day and there was a time u had to be set up by because part of the day is a "no movement" rule. Maybe that is just for the sambar? I just remember funny rules....

How are u getting over to the island?

I think that’s just for the sambar hunts. I’ve got a 18’ offshore boat that we’re going to take across and anchor up.

Again....I have no first hand knowledge....just what I read....u will have to anchor out a good distance and either carry or bring a little boat to float ur gear to shore .....

Please give a write up about the experience when u are finished.....I've been researching that hunt for a while and first-hand knowledge would be awesome

I just look for the terrain transitions.... marsh meets palmettos and oaks....etc.. Good luck!

Haven’t been in several years, did the same hunt you did. My buddy missed a buck, I saw a young sambar bull. I hunted around some oaks, didn’t see crap. Buddy hunted a heavy trail he found in the scrub brush and missed that buck. Big place, flat, bring a bike maybe, we did to get to away a bit
