Steal of a deal

For the record, it took me 12 years to shoot my first elk, then I shot 8 more in the next 15 years.

Edit- I think it was 11 years actually, started at 14, shot my first elk at 25.

I got it because I mostly elk hunt these days and shoot incidental deer or bear that show up while hunting elk. So I got an elk caliber. My Ruger was .270 and I killed every elk I shot with it. Yes, it kicks harder, and you really don't need it, even for elk. I think I mostly just wanted to try something new. I've only used 3 deer/elk type rifles in my life. I started with a bolt action 30/30 my dad owned, got the .270 when I was mostly hunting deer (well, was hunting elk, just not seeing any) then got the .300 WSM after we were having solid success on elk.

So, no, living in the east I wouldn't bother with it, no need for it.
Well, there you have it, bothe ends of the spectrum!

I originally built my model 70 as a mountain rifle for Maine. It is stainless, had a super long barrel on it and a BOSS. Laminated wood stock. MTN rifle conversion was chopping and recessed custom crown, barrel has been fluted, bolt has been jeweled, custom trigger, glass bedded, stock butt cavity drilled, and vari-x II stainless scope. Its a 300wm because you never know what you're going to run into in ME. and that thing shoots flat for a LONG ways. it got me addicted to the 30cal. The wsm just kinda happened into my lap and I had always wanted a short action 30. I"ve shot deer and bear with mine and never excessive mess. In fact, my '06 made more of a mess in a deer...

Oh, and everytime I go through my safe I think about selling the tikka. Then I pick it up and remember ridiculously light it is and put it back...but maybe some day. But you both know that since you both own one :)

See, your much more of a gun nut than I am. I view a gun more like a hammer. It's a tool for the activity. I don't ever start thinking about another one till I want to start another activity. I've been thinking about coyote hunting and looking at .223's. If I get one ill probably only ever own the one. If I hadn't lost the ruger I'm sure I would still be using it and been fine with it.

Thanks guys. I like short actions, and 30 caliber boolits. But tbh, my 06 is more gun than I'll ever need.

Funny thing about those faster calibers. My old 7mm mag did less meat damage than mine and my dad's 06s.

I'm with ya, I agree its a tool. I just like to tinker. All the guns I own are hunting related and were mostly bought or bilt wiht a purpose in mind.

Growing up owning and shooting an Anshutz competitively, my taste just got expensive and very specific fast...

HA. I had a weatherby 7mm mag for 1 year. I hated that gun!

Theres just something about the '06....it creates havoc and damage. First bugk I shot with my 740(which put a 4 foot flame out the barrel) I walked up to it and there was smoke coming out of the bucks mouth....it was like a 90yrd shot. I was like "that'll do....that'll do..."

Smoke out of his mouth! My dad will call and say, "I've got one breathing fire." Lol

I hated my 7mm too. Never shot worth a heck. Swapped scopes, tried every commercial round I could, floated the barrel, and had a bigger buddy shoot it (thinking maybe I was just a sissy flincher). Glad I sold it for a cz 452.

Too funny, I did all those things too. I had it tuned up pretty good, even put it on a boyds stock thinking it wast drilled straight, timney trigger.... IT looked cool, but I didnt trust that rifle worth a damn!2019-04-25 14.47.59.jpg

I readily admit I'm kinda weird. I just upgraded my bow this year with 6 yo Quest Rogue I got off craigslist for $120. The bow I upgraded from I bought new in 1999. Both my main hunting packs are Lowe Alpines I picked up at thrift stores for $5 and $10 dollars. Boots and pants are my retired uniforms (we get new boots and tactical pants each year). The outdoor industry would starve if it relied on me. I've spent more this year than I have in probably the last 6 or 7 combined, just because I had no desire to climb trees on used scrounged gear. So new rope, new Grigri, new accender, new carabiners, rock harness, etc. Between that and the cheap bow its been a spending year for sure.

Oh, and Bone Broadheads, there's another $130 or so

I'll put it this way. My dad bought that gun for me when I turned 16. I was not going to get rid of it, even though I hated it. He watched me get frustrated enough often enough that HE told me sell it and buy a gun you'll use.

So Nick Jr. is going to inherit a fine .22lr that his grandaddy bought his daddy when he turned 16. ;)

@Lacky, keep on keepin' on! I've bought way too much new gear, but I've also bought way too much craigslist, fb market, and yard sale gear. And you can't beat bdu's for pants!
