Suggested ScentLok 2018 garments and accessories for new users

In the past few years ScentLok has been offering a lot of exterior jackets and pants with windproof and or waterproof polyurethane membranes (check ScentLok’s website or hang tags for confirmation of membranes or not) in them and they have to be cared for slightly differently than their permeable (allow air flow from body through exterior fabric and vise-versa) garments.

All ScentLok polyurethane membrane garments have their carbon liner on the body side (inside) of the membrane. Because these polyurethane membranes have a lack of air flow through them (why there windproof and waterproof) they don’t allow the interior Carbon Alloy liner to do its job in adsorbing odor molecules from the exterior fabric of the garment.

For all ScentLok jackets and pants with membranes, it's imperative to care for them a bit differently to make certain that the exterior fabric doesn’t get odors on it that the interior Carbon Alloy liner can’t adsorb.

When ScentLok membrane garments are de-adsorbed in the dryer the exterior fabric will be become pristine again. Once out of the dryer the membrane garments need to go in air tight containers or bags just as all other ScentLok Carbon Alloy lined garments do and they can be stored together with permeable garments. During use however the hunter should be extra cautious not to wear a membrane garment while driving or around areas with foul foreign odors to the deer woods.

While ScentLok's permeable exterior garments (any garment without a membrane) will adsorb odor molecules from the exterior fabric because the molecules will be attracted through the permeable fabric and be adsorbed into the Carbon Alloy liner, the membrane in ScentLok’s membrane garments will block the molecules from passing through and from being adsorbed into the liner.

Through the 1400 degree and under pressure heating procedure to make activated carbon, the surface and pores of the activated carbon becomes charged, meaning it has electrons that readily interact and suck in molecules from its immediate surroundings. So with a permeable suit
there is a little less worry about the exterior fabric having and holding odors.

The membrane garments play a huge roll however as they are phenomenal at blocking the wind and or rain. During cold windy hunts, no matter how many under layers you wear, if one of them doesn’t have a membrane to block the wind, the cold winds will eventually pass through all the garments and you will get cold. A membrane garment will also aid dramatically in containing your body heat within the garment for cold weather situations.

Something else of importance is that the more permeable the garment, the more chance there is for odor molecules to pass through it before the activated carbon can do its entire job of adsorption. The Savanna garments for instance are the most permeable due to their light and very permeable exterior fabric and in high wind situations there may be some odor molecules that pass through the Carbon Alloy liner without being adsorbed due to its high permeability (pass through) rate and the wind blowing air through it. In still or light wind situations, having odor molecules pass through a Savanna garment is not an issue at all.

All of ScentLok’s other permeable garments have exterior fabrics that are dense enough to contain the odor molecules long enough for adsorption under any wind conditions.

A few years back ScentLok used the exact same carbon liner in their BaseLayers undergarments that they did in their exterior garments. In still conditions a hunter could have worn the lightest weight BaseLayer garment and been fine hunting even though he or she would have looked like a ballerina in the tree because they fit like tights. I did it a few times.

However ScentLok never advertised that the BaseLayers had the same carbon liner as they didn't want hunters in warm weather climates to wear it only while hunting because the lightweight Baselayer was extremely permeable and in windy situations would allow too much odor to pass through before the carbon could adsorb it.

ScentLok (owns the US Patent on using activated carbon in hunting garments and that's why other brands use inferior technologies) is an amazing and incredible product and once a hunter learns how to properly care for and store it, what to use in conjunction with it, and how to use it in the field, sightings and kill opportunities will go up, BIG TIME!

ScentLok and its function for hunting can't be argued to me so to those that don't believe in it, please save your verbiage, energy and lack of knowledge of technology for something you can defend with factual feedback. I've hunted for over 50 seasons and have taken 50 record book bucks. I hunted 35 seasons before properly using ScentLok and 18 seasons since and definitely without question or hesitation can testify to its effectiveness.

1. For Midwest (where I hunt) hunters my go to suit is the Full Season Taktix. It’s a permeable suit that’s extremely comfortable with a soft and dead quiet micro-fleece exterior and interior.

It’s a midweight suit and with a couple undergarments it’s good for temps down to 35 degrees and with only a T-shirt as an undergarment it’s comfortable up to 65 degrees. If you’re only going to own one suit, this is the one to buy and you can layer beneath it on an as need bases for colder weather. Make sure to buy the next size up (especially the jacket) if you plan on using several layering garments for temperatures into the 20’s.

I wear the Full Season midweight head cover with drop down facemask (must have a drop down facemask for full protection) in conjunction with the Full Season Tactix suit and Savanna gloves. ScentLok also offers a Full Season bow release glove.

2. For Southern hunters or hunters in the Midwest that can afford multiple suits and hunt the early season, I suggest either the Savanna Reign suit or the Savanna Quickstrike one piece coverall.

The Reign is new for 2018 and is a pretty awesome suit as it has a NeverWet coating. It’s not waterproof (no polyurethane membrane in it) yet it is extremely water resistant and is also dead quiet and permeable. That’s what’s so unique about it. It’s the best lightweight garment fabric I’ve ever seen from any manufacturer and there’s a very good reason why.

To be labeled a waterproof garment the garment has to have a polyurethane and or Teflon membrane in it with taped seams and neither of those membranes are permeable (allow air flow through them) even though some companies claim they are breathable. They pass a totally worthless vapor breathability test, but trust me on this they don’t breathe and are very clammy in warm weather conditions because they don’t allow any evaporation of your body perspiration!!!!!!!!!

Waterproof membranes are also very noisy and require a deep napped exterior fabric to mask that noise therefore making it impossible to make a quiet lightweight waterproof garment that I believe is acceptable for bowhunting.

The Quickstrike is also a great suit and is great as a quick cover-up. I also like it because I can drape the top off and tie the sleeves around my waist for long entries to keep from overheating. It comes with a hood with a facemask which is fine, but I don’t use it because it covers my ears and I like to hear.

I wear the Savanna lightweight head cover with drop down facemask (must have a drop down facemask for full protection) in conjunction with any Savanna garments.

ScentLok’s Savanna lightweight gloves are perfect with this suit but you could use the Full Season bow release gloves.

3. For temperatures from 10 to 40 degrees the new for 2018 Wind Brace suit is phenomenal. This suit replaces the Vortex suit which was in the line for 4 years and was the windproof suit I had requested for years. The Wind Brace suit has a polyurethane membrane in it which is waterproof, however the seams are not taped so it can’t be labeled waterproof, but can be labeled windproof. Yes the membrane has a noise factor but the deep napped fleece exterior fabric and fleece interior masks the noise of the membrane making it very quit while remaining very comfortable, soft and pliable.

When hunting in cold windy conditions the wind is not your friend and this suit will protect you from it. No matter the amount of layers you wear when it’s cold and windy, if they are all permeable and allow air flow, the hawk (wind) will get through them in time and force you off stand.

Permeable garments are phenomenal for warm weather hunting because the air flow keeps you cool and evaporates perspiration, but for cold windy conditions, you want membraned exterior garments to block the wind and also to hold in your body heat. You can layer under the Wind Brace suit on an as need basis for whatever the weather dictates.

Concerning head covers for cold weather you have 2 options. You can wear your Full Season or Savanna head covers with drop down facemasks and then wear a ScentLok Knit Cuff beanie over them or you could use a ScentLok Radar-Style fleece head cover with drop down facemask.

In bitter cold weather I still wear Savanna lightweight gloves but also wear a ScentLok handwarmer muff around my waist to keep my hands in or you can use Full Season bow release gloves.

4. ScentLok's new for 2018 Hydrotherm waterproof jacket (they also make a Hydrotherm bib which I don’t have) with 170 grams of Primaloft insulation is an awesome jacket and I wear it with my Windbrace pants. Primaloft is a very high end insulation that weigh’s virtually, nothing. This jacket has a polyurethane membrane with taped seams to make it waterproof and is the first waterproof jacket ScentLok has made that I would wear because it’s quiet. This jacket is for zero to 30 degree temps, so I have no clue why it's waterproof but love that it's windproof, insulated and extremely lightweight. Because my lower body doesn’t get cold as easily, the Windbrace pants are sufficient to wear with the Hydrotherm jacket.

Accessories:

If you can afford it, having a ScentLok backpack is a good plan as it can be frequently de-adsorbed in the dryer and then be loaded and kept in an air-tight container. This will assure you will not be taking a human odor contaminated pack with you that will likely negate everything else you do concerning your scent free regimen. Never blame your ScentLok suit if you carry a regular back or fanny pack that isn’t properly cared for.

ScentLok makes a lot of great merino wool socks that are very comfortable. You don’t need to wear ScentLok socks as your boots should be waterproof and therefore don’t allow your foot odor to pass or permeate through them. I drape my pant legs over my boots when hunting and the odor coming out the throat of the boots is adsorbed in the overhanging pant legs.

ScentLok’s OZ hard air-tight totes are great for garment storage containers and their more affordable ATOM air-tight bags are as well.

There are many other garment options that ScentLok offers and the ones listed are simply my favorites for differing weather conditions and keep in mind that ScentLok garments only work to the extent that they are properly cared for. You take proper care of them and they will take care of you.

Decided Im going to get the early season coveralls for next year at a minimum. Whether it changes the game or not is still to be determined but if it helps some at a minimum its a win right!

Thanks for sharing. I ordered some more stuff on closeout last week. Savannah ultimate headcover was 8.99. They are out of stock now but the full season headcover is in stock for 11.99. That’s cheaper than I would pay without the carbon lining. The crosshair pants are on sale also. I wear them all season. If it dips into the 40s I throw a pair of fleece pajama pants on under them and I’m good to about 35. I really like the pockets the hip pockets are tough to get in while in the saddle so I throw keys and wallet in there. That leaves you four pockets on your thigh that have plenty of room. If I didn’t mind the stuff bouncing around when I walk I could just use the pockets instead of a pack for early season. By far my favorite pair of hunting pants. They were also bought on closeout for 49.99. I definitely have pants that cost more but I like less.

@John Eberhart is the rogue the only pack they carry? It’s seems large for a day pack.

@EricS

The rogue pack was actually too small for me. The pockets where also too tight to easily retrieve items from. I also tried a larger cabelas scentlok pack but that too was a bit too small.

I also didn’t like the way the rogue pack set against some of the the trees I hunt from.

I ended up selling it and giving the cabelas pack to my dad. I bought a Kathy Kelly pack which holds an unbelievable amount of stuff, it’s super quiet, and so simple. It washes and dries easily (I wash my pack in scent free detergent frequently, 4 times already this year).

I want to find someone that can replicate the Kathy Kelly pack using scentlok fleece fabric because I want to be able to simply throw the pack in the dryer, but this now requires me to buy old scentlok suits to harvest fabric from and someone to sew it.

I haven’t had any problem with my regular Kathy Kelly pack as long as I keep it clean.

I wouldn’t use old scentlok fabric to make a pack. Every time scentlok gets washed you lose carbon. It isn’t long before it is no longer effective if you wash it several times.

I don’t wash my scentlok clothes. I only de-adsorb them in the dryer.

Good call on not using used scentlok clothes for fabric. I’m going to look for some new with tags Vortex suits or Windbrace suits on clearance to get my fabric from for sewing a backpack.

I want be able to not wash my pack. Instead, just throw it in the dryer. This saves a lot of time, and is especially useful when hunting during rainy days.

Had 2 does underneath me in what felt like calm air this evening. I didn’t drop any milkweed at the time so I can’t confirm where my scent was going.
I had showered, changed at the truck, wore gloves, rubber boots and a scentlok coverall with a hood and face mask.
The deer were relaxed the whole time.
