Suggested WMA to hunt hogs in South Carolina

My friend and I are considering not to go to GA this year to hog hunt and try something a little closer. We are coming from Maryland and ideally, we would like to hunt WMA’s either in the northern half or central part of South Carolina. Probably won’t occur till mid-February and by the looks of SC’s regulations, we will probably be using small game weapons.

Anyone have some suggested WMAs I can start researching?

Manchester state forest is pretty good for pigs. Bring a portable boat in case its flooded and find the high ground. The coast is loaded with pigs but Im not sure about the public land down there.

I have not yet hunted hogs in SC but did find a distribution map from the DNR website. Also, her is the link to the most recent harvest data they have posted. http://www.dnr.sc.gov/wildlife/hog/harvest.html

Disclaimer, I have only hunted hogs in Arkansas and LA but hogs are hogs and I would target river systems/creek bottoms looking for sign.

I'd like to get some info on where to kill hogs too. Gonna be hunting from the Joe

Sorry wrong button. From Jocassee to Any where in the mid state area, Sumter NF and all.

Just remember that hogs don't stand still too long unless baited. If you get a decent shot, take it.
Also, the only truly 'fresh' hog sign - has a pig standing in it. Other sign that appears to be 'fresh' may not have a hog within a 1/4 mile of it.

Gonna be heading to my in-laws around the Greenville area is there public in that land I should stop around ?

To my knowledge your gonna have to get to the mid or lower half of the state to find pigs.

According to this article Anderson county, next door to Greenville had the highest pig harvest per square mile in the state in 2019. I would look for something there!

We‘ve got pigs on public in and around Clemson. About 30 min from Greenville. However, you are regulated to use what ever weapon goes with the open season which would be small game weapons right now.

I was looking into doing some Hog Hunting and I found that they have a small season in most of the WMAs in South Carolina from March 1-6th

I was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers on hunting Francis Marion - or if someone could give a good suggestion of another area.

I would also welcome anyone that could give me a contact for someone on Private land that has a Hog problem and would allow hunting.

there will be 2 of us - and we will most likely bring a canoe for a little better access.

I’ve hunted and kills hogs at Donnelley and Webb WMA’s. I hear Ace basin has good hog hunting too but I’ve never been there. I was a sheriffs deputy in Spartanburg and we got car vs hog calls all the time, mostly near lake Bowen. My bro in law traps hogs for SCDNR and he says the upstate is thick with them too. It’s been a while since I hunted the lowcountry WMA’s but you’ll need a good compass, lots of water, and snake chaps aren’t a bad idea either. Call the SCDNR and they can point you in the right direction.

Thank you for the pointers. Unfortunately as of right now it looks like a lot of the lowland WMAs are closing vehicular access due to flooding. I was leaning towards hunting Woodbury - which is currently on that list. Would you be able to recommend any public land on higher ground that would have a decent chance of success?

I guess the ace in the hole would still be to find some private land that has a hog issue that would welcome hunters.
